He did not start participating in any sports at all until the age of 24 when he rejected his Jehova's Witness upbringing. He joined Team Quest and made his mixed martial arts debut in 2001, defeating Drew McFedries via TKO in the second round. After earning a 5-1 record he was drafted into the first season of the Ultimate Fighter, but an injury would force him out of the competition but not off the show. He completed the show as one of Randy Couture's assistant coaches.
Quarry debuted in the UFC at the Ultimate Fighter finale, defeating Lodune Sincaid halfway through the first round by knockout. Two more knockout wins over Shonie Carter and Pete Sell resulted in a title shot against Rich Franklin. Many people felt that Quarry was rushed into the #1 contender spot, and he ended up being knocked out in one of the most brutal highlights in UFC history.
After this, Quarry took a nearly two year sabbatical from the sport to rehab numerous injuries including a serious back problem that required surgery to fuse spinal discs together. He returned in September of 2007 to defeat Pete Sell in a rematch. His next fight against Kalib Starnes in Montreal was a unanimous decision win, with Kalib Starnes refusing to engage and receiving a 30-24 score from one judge.
