Trained early in wrestling, boxing and kickboxing, Baroni is known for his knockout ability and had great success in his amateur career doing just that; knocking people out.
He joined the UFC after only his second pro fight outworking Curtis Stout for a unanimous decision victory at UFC 30. He went on to have only mediocre success in the UFC, going 3 – 5 – 0 and at one point losing four matches in a row, prompting UFC president Dana White to suggest he retire from MMA.
Baroni left the UFC shortly after and joined PRIDE in Japan, having more success as a fighter and in his popularity, going 4 – 2 – 0 over that time and gaining a massive fan following.
His last match was against long time hated rival Frank Shamrock on a Strikeforce card in June 2007 where he lost via rear naked choke in the second round. Baroni tested positive after the match for anabolic steroids.
He is currently appealing the test, fine and one year suspension.
