Marquardt has trained in wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Kenpo in his earlier years and has trained with famous kickboxing and MMA trainers Duane Ludwig and Greg Jackson.
He began competing in 1999, and won the Bas Rutten invitational tournament in only his 6th MMA fight.
He then went on to compete in the Pancrase organization, eventually becoming and unprecedented 7 time Middleweight Champion.
He moved to the UFC in 2005 and made his debut on the first episode of Ultimat Fight Night, defeating Ivan Salaverry by unanimous decision.
He won 4 straight UFC fights before being offered a shot at the Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva at UFC 73 – Stacked, where he lost by TKO in the first round.
