Starnes began his MMA Career in 1998 fighting on some Vancouver and Western Canadian fight cards that were sprouting up. He was out of the fight game until 2003, when MMA had better legitimized itself and the competition had increased.

Blazing through the local tournaments and organizations, he amassed a record of 6 – 0 – 1, including a win over future UFC standout Jason Macdonald. In 2006, Kalib was chosen to compete in the third season of Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter Reality Series.

Although he was eliminated in the Semi Finals to eventual Champion Kendall Grove, Starnes suffered a serious rib injury during the fight and had to verbally submit to withdraw from the match. Starnes was an instant fan favorite from his appearance on the show, and recovered from his loss to Grove with a resounding first round submission win over fellow TUF contestant Danny Abbadi in the TUF finale.

Starnes went on to face Japanese superstar, and eventual title contender, Yushin Okami at UFC 64, losing by TKO in the third round.

He bounced back with a massive unanimous decision win at UFC 71 over Ultimate Fighter 1 alumni and striking specialist Chris Leben.
