Wrestling was the foundation of Tanner’s MMA career, where he competed at top high school levels.

He began his MMA career in 1997, making his way through the Pancrase organization of Japan and reaching the UFC in 1999 at UFC 18 – Road to the Heavyweight Title. He quickly rose through the ranks and was awarded a UFC title shot after his third appearance in the UFC against Tito Ortiz at UFC 30 in 2001. Tanner was knocked out by Ortiz with a body slam at :32 of the first round.

Tanner continued to fight in the UFC consistently for the next five years, posting wins against notable UFC fighters Phil Baroni, David Terrell and Robbie Lawler. As well as losing some bouts to the likes of David Loiseau and Rich Franklin.

Personal troubles and injuries have stunted his success in the UFC. With his rrecord, style and caliber of opponent he could easily be considered a legend of the UFC.

Tanner is currently working to sort out his private troubles, build a training facility and make his was back to the UFC.
