Beginning his career in MMA in 2003, McCarthy was a contestant on the fourth season SPIKE TV reality series The Ultimate Fighter. He first fought in the UFC at UFC 53 – Heavy Hitters, losing by TKO to David Loiseau in the first round.
On the reality series, McCarthy was pegged as “Captain Miserable” by his fellow housemates.
McCarthy was eliminated from the show by Pete Sell in his first bout, but managed to get his first UFC win over Gideon Ray on The Ultimate Fighter 4 finale, submitting his fellow contestant by first round armbar submission to post his first UFC win.
