Born in the Netherland, Bas Rutten is a MMA legend. Not only has he been one of the most dominant fighters in MMA history, but he has also transitioned his career into a successful media personality.
He began his fighting as a Muay Thai kickboxer, putting together a record of 14 – 1. His MMA career started in the Pancrase organization in Japan, spanning 5 years and 30 fights.
He entered the UFC at UFC 18 in 1999, knocking out Tsuyoshi Kohsaka in the first round (the time was 14:15, as the UFC had 15 minute rounds at the time). He then fought Kevin Randleman for the UFC heavyweight Championship at UFC 20, winning a unanimous decision victory.
Rutten then vacated the title due to extensive injuries to his knees and biceps, ending his MMA career. He transitioned into cooler commentary as the English hos for the PRIDE FC organization, and became a favorite amongst MMA fans. He also composed many books and videos relating to MMA training and technique.
He has had one comeback fight since retiring; in 2006 he defeated Ruben Villareal by KO at the WFA – King of the Streets event in Los Angeles.
