The fourth and final Grand Slam event in an annual season is the US Open. Held from late August to early September, the US Open is the most prestigious tennis tournament in North America.
The US Open first began as an exclusive high society event. First held as a men’s only event in 1881, the tournament was known as the US National Singles Championships. In 1887, the first women’s event was held.
In 2006, the US Open was the first Grand Slam tournament to apply call reviews and instant replays using Hawk-Eye technology. Available only in Arthur Ashe Stadium (Court 1) and Louis Armstrong Stadium (Court 2), Hawk-Eye allows players when doubting a call to challenge. Each player is allowed two challenges per set, plus one additional challenge in the event of a tiebreak.
In 2007, the US Open Prize Purse at $19,600,000 was the biggest in the history of tennis.
