November 14 -- Manchester, UKDENIS KANG -130
MICHAEL BISPING Even
For betting purposes, let's look at the contestants:
KANG (32-11, 12 KO's), the -130 favorite in the BetUS UFC mixed martial arts bettng odds, is a native of the French territory of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, near Newfoundland in the North Atlantic. He spent his early life in Vancouver, and currently lives in south Florida. He is one of the most experienced mixed martial artists around, having begun his career back in 1998 with a submission over Eric Harcrow.
He fought all over the place at the time, winning some and losing some, competing in the IFC, the Bas Rutten Invitational, the Ultimate Warrior Challenge in Canada, Pancrase, Extreme Challenge and others. He built up a head of steam fighting in the Spirit organization in South Korea for a little less than a year, winning the Spirit heavyweight title.
After that he joined up with America Top Team and spent some time in Pride as well. Over a two-fight period in 2006 he knocked out Albert Basconcelles and Murilo Rua in a combined 27 seconds. He lost to Gegard Mousasi in a middleweight Grand Prix event in the Dream promotion in April 2008, but was able to rebound six months later with a KO of Marvin Eastman, which paved the way for him to enter the UFC.
He made his UFC debut this past January with a loss in the second round by guillotine choke against Alan Belcher, in a fight where allegedly he had a sprained ankle. In his last fight, on April 18, he won a decision over Xavier Foupa-Pokam at UFC 97.
BISPING (17-1, 11 KO's), the even money underdog in the BetUS UFC betting odds, originally hails from Cyprus but will be fighting in his home area against Denis Kang. Bisping goes way back with martial arts, fighting in a "no holds barred" event back in 1994. He later took up kick-boxing and won the British professional title.
He became a student of karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as well. Eventually he turned to MMA, and made his pro debut in April of 2004 with a first-round submission of Steve Matthews. In only his third pro fight, he won the Cage Rage light heavyweight title over Mark Epstein, and remained in England, where he won his first ten pro fights.
Bisping came to the United States to make his UFC debut at the Ultimate Fighter 3 finale, with a TKO over Josh Haynes. What followed were wins over Erc Schafer, Elvis Sinosic and Matt Hamill, which brought his record to 14-0 and stamped him as a prime contender. At UFC 78, he lost a split decision to Rashard Evans, who later went on to win the light heavyweight title. With that, Bisping made the decision to move down to the middleweight class, and stopped Charles McCarthy at UFC 83. He then jumped all over Jason Day, stopping him in the first round, and scored a decision over Chris Leben at UFC 89, making it three straight middleweight wins.
That led to a big showdown with fellow TUF coach Dan Handerson, which took place at UFC 100 in July. Henderson nailed Bisping with a right hook, knocked him down, and finished the job quickly. Now it is time for Bisping to redeem himself.
When you've been around for as long as Denis Kang has, you are able to assemble a pretty well-rounded repertoire, and that is what he brings to the table in this match. He can fight standing up. He can fight on the ground. He has seen just about every style there is. The question might be whether he is a world-class fighter or a club fighter. Can he beat very good fighters at this point?
That question is asked of Bisping as well. Those names in his "W" column aren't all that overwhelming, and when he has been tested by top opponents, he hasn't come out on top. The fight with Henderson was a big opportunity, and he didn't get the job done.
I would not underestimate Bisping's wrestling abilities, nor would I discount his ability in the stand-up, despite that knockout loss to Henderson. He's a well-rounded fighter too; he's maybe a little fresher, and he's fighting in front of countrymen. Plus, he's the underdog. This is a price worth taking, so go with Michael Bisping at even money in the BetUS UFC mixed martial arts betting odds.
