Hughes Your Daddy - Matt Hughes UFC Profile
Current Welter Weight Champ, Matt Hughes is an intimidating fighter with an intimidating record. At 42-4-0 (winning 19 of his last 20), Hughes is arguably the greatest WW champ in UFC history. Hughes’ career has been nothing short of dominant.
This two-time All American wrestler combines that wrestling style with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to even out his fighting style. Fighting out of Hillsboro, Illinois, Hughes’ record suggests a fighter still in the prime of his career as many are waiting for him to slow down.
Hughes began fighting in the UFC in 1999 and won his first title in 2001 after KOing Carlos Newton at UFC 34. He went on to win five straight title defenses before submitting in the first round to BJ Penn at UFC 46. Hughes regained the title later on that year via an armbar at 4:59 of the first round against Georges St. Pierre in the War of 04.
Hughes is also extremely strong mentally. He’s known for his mind games and attacks that begin even before the match starts. Many attribute his victory over St. Pierre to Hughes’ mental game and his ability to get under the skin of his opponents. You’ve seen the smack talk on The Ultimate Fighter 4, and Hughes hopes to carry through on Saturday, November 18th at Arco Arena in Sacramento vs. St. Pierre.
Coming off of a wins at UFC 60 versus Royce Gracie in May and at UFC 63 versus BJ Penn two months ago, Hughes continues to look stronger and more confident as he ages. At 33 years old, the 5’9’’ fighter is a veteran of the UFC looking to keep up his legacy.
