UFC 109 Recap – Couture Destroys Coleman
by Charles Jay

Tito Ortiz Lips Off Coleman In Defeat To Couture
Randy Couture stood, wrestled and wore down Mark Coleman en route to his eighteenth victory as an MMA bet. Yet it was Tito Ortiz who stole the end of the show by mouthing off to Coleman who responded by saying, “F--- you too, Tito. Any f---ing time. Anytime, douchebag.” Coleman was far outmatched in his much hyped fight with Couture, but he seemed more than willing to knuckle up with Tito Ortiz, ten years his junior.
The victory for Couture shouldn’t be mired by Ortiz’s childish antics. With such a rousing victory, Couture may be pegged as the number-one contender in the light heavyweight division. While Coleman will be sent properly packing with the loss, Couture is more than well deserving of meeting the victory between Machida-Rua in May.
Chael Sonnen Masterfully Upsets Marquardt
Nate “The Great’ Marquardt was turned in to a pedestrian by the superior grappling of Sonnen who rode his way to victory on the back of his opponent. That win slates the unheralded Sonnen as the top contender to the winner of Vitor Belfort and Anderson Silva and he’ll need his extremely talented ground game to have a hope of beating either of those two.
Marquardt, meanwhile, is going to need to lobby for a fight against the winner of Silva-Bisping to stay in contendership. Good luck with that Nate. Guys named “Great” via self-imposed nickname deserve to lose as -350 favorites.
Matt Serra Stifles Frank Trigg
While the victory for Serra won’t do anything to plug him back in to the title picture, the win certainly shoves Trigg out of the UFC. Thank God. Serra is 35 years old, and in his division he’s considered an ancient. He should be thankful for the layup matchup he had against Trigg. His next opponent will be much tougher as he tries to substantiate his candidacy.
Maia Stunningly Strikes His Way To Victory
Demian Maia, who was pounded in to oblivion by Nate Marquardt in his last fight, surprised the MMA betting world by earning a decision over Dan Miller. The all-world jiu-jitsu wrestler traded blows with Miller throughout the fight much to the chagrin of those in attendance. Anytime two guys who define their games with ground wrestling end the fight on their feet through three rounds, the fans are the ones who lose. Maia needed a deceive victory to earn the respect of the betting community, and failed to do so with a win.
Paulo Thiago Earns Submission Bonus Over Swick
Mike Swick had the name recognition but it was the rising star, Paula Thiago, that rose in to fame by defeating him. Thiago’s thick skull and handy striking kept Swick off his game the entire fight and when the fight went to the mat, it was Thiago’s tactful ability to secure top control that won the fight. While a win over Swick will certainly gain the attention of fight fans, Thiago has a long ladder to climb to get a shot at the title.
