It’s easy these days for horse betting faithful to get all caught up in the intricacies of the game and quickly lose view of the simple things that produces winning results.
One of the things that players in New York can look to for winners at Belmont this meet is to examine post positions, to start off with, in order to find winning plays.
The first thing that jumps off the canvas is that sprinting on the main track has played pretty far as far as slots are concerned.
There really has been only one ‘break out’ slot through June 19 and that may just be a fluke. Post 2 has produced the most winners at 22% but that may be more of a luck thing than anything else.
The rest of the posts going short were very fair with the range of winning percentage from 7% on the extreme in post 10 to 16% from post 5.
After further sprint evaluation, it becomes evident that a runner has a much better chance from the 7 slot in as posts 8 through 12 sprinting only produced only 10 winners from 110 starters.
The outside slots going long on the main track have also suffered this meet and horse bettors would be wise to avoid using posts 7 through 10. Of the 73 starters from those positions, only 8 were lucky enough to reach the winner’s circle.
The expanding turf course at Belmont also offers some clues for astute horse bettors to learn from this meet.
On both the Widener, the outside course, and in the inner course, those from the inside 3 slots had their collective work cut out.
On both courses of the 162 runners that started from those cozy slots, only 10 were able to get the job done in time.
Going long on the turf presented a sort of a different view of things. Those runners that had middling posts, slots from 4 to 7 did very well overall.
A total of 309 runners broke from those slots the first 51 days of the stand and a nice percentage came back on top. The number of winners came back 45, for a solid 14.5% winning rate.
Horseplayers have to account for all of the other factors that are needed to win races, but they also cannot bet blindly into the fact of bad stats.

By limiting the number of outside runners one uses going short and long on the main is the first step at getting it right.
When horse bettors are faced with the wide-open turf action, they have to put certain things in their favor and that means looking for horses that are in the middle of the gate. Those posts will help those runners avoid getting shuffled from the inside slots or avoid getting hung out to dry from the marooned posts.
Try to take this simple approach to the bank AFTER you have done all the other work and rewards will be in the offing.
