Horse Betting: Three New Races Kick Off Breeders' Cup

Breeders' Cup Day just got better. For the first time this year, The Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be conducted over two days on Oct. 26-27 at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, New Jersey.

With the expansion of the two day format, three new Breeders' Cup races were added to the menu.

The best filly and mare sprinters will no longer have to take on the boys, juveniles with turf in their pedigree have their own race, and horses that don't have the stamina to go 1 ¼ miles in the Classic can now go a flat mile on Friday.

Take a look at these contenders in Friday's new races:

$1 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

#1 Miss Macy Sue comes in here having won 5 out of her last 6 starts. While I was skeptical about her last start winning the PI Masters over the Tapeta which earned solid numbers, both pace and speed figs, I am more confident that was a solid race after the runner up #8 Wild Gams came back to win the G3 TCA at Keeneland on 10/6. The trip is going to be the key.

Razo needs to find some room for her filly as she likely is going to be mid pack. If she gets a good trip she should be in good position as they turn for home. She had a easy breeze over the main track here on 10/22 which was a maintenance drill, as she was not asked for her best. She looks to be sitting on a good one here and she is going to be an overlay. She has a win over a wet fast track and a solid enough off track pedigree if the rains come.

$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf

#12 Domestic Fund will have to overcome a tough post to score here but the European invader has a super pedigree and still appears to have plenty of upside. The son of Sadler's Wells is a half brother to Refuse to Bend ($1.3 million) and Media Puzzle ($1.6 million). The colt was no match for Curtain Call last out in the Group 2 Bereford, but it was his first go in stakes company.

He is back with lasix and blinkers added here and he should get a good tracking trip behind what likely will be a sharp early pace. He should get the jump on his fellow countrymen in here as he seems to have a bit more tactical speed. He has handled ground with plenty of give to it and it seems likely the going today will be yielding to soft if the rains keep coming.

$1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

It's tough to have much confidence in this race with #1 Discreet Cat in here. The colt was brilliant last year but has not looked like the same animal in his last two starts. His rep will assure he is going to a short price and if he rebounds and beats us, so be it. I'm taking a stab with #7 Park Avenue Ball, who loves the Monmouth strip (10-6-3-1). In '06 he popped a couple of big Beyers winning the Skip Away (110) and Iselin (104).

The five year old was a good second two back in the six furlong Icecapade and then was not a threat against a strong group of sprinters in the Vosburgh. The stretch out will suit and we should catch a generous price. The five year old has been on a wet track twice, both runner up finishes, and is by a favorite off track sire of mine in Citidancer.
