Tennis Betting US Open

Grand Slam Tennis Betting: US Open 2009
Place: New York, USA
Venue: Flushing Meadows Corona Park
Date: August 31- September 13, 2009
Draw Size: 128
Surface: Acrylic Hard court
Prize Money: TBA

Tournament Facts: The fourth and final Grand Slam event in an annual season is the US Open. Held from late August to early September at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York, the US Open is the most prestigious tennis tournament in North America.

The US Open first began as an exclusive high society event. First held as a men’s only event in 1881, the tournament was known as the US National Singles Championships. In 1887, the first women’s event was held. In contrast to the previous three Grand Slams in the annual season, the US Open differs markedly in that the final set is played to a tiebreak. The other three Grand Slams, the final set is played until a player wins by two games; for example, the 2008 Wimbledon final was won by Nadal 9-7 in the final fifth set.

In 2006, the US Open was the first Grand Slam tournament to apply call reviews and instant replays using Hawk-Eye technology. Available only in Arthur Ashe Stadium (Court 1) and Louis Armstrong Stadium (Court 2), Hawk-Eye allows players when doubting a call to challenge. In 2007, the US Open Prize Purse at $19,600,000 was (at the time) the biggest in the history of tennis.

US Open 2008 Review: Although Roger Federer struggled for much of the 2008 season, when all had played, and the curtain came down on the final act, it was a familiar sight at Flushing Meadows as Roger Federer accepted his fifth consecutive US Open trophy. The World No.2 Roger Federer became the first person since 1924 to win five US Open crowns in a row; he defeated No.6 Andy Murray in straight sets 6-2, 7-5, 6-2. Meanwhile, Serena Williams claimed the Women’s singles US Open title – her third US Open title – when she beat Jelena Jankovic of Serbia.

Tennis Betting Wimbledon

Grand Slam Tennis Betting: Wimbledon Championship 2009
Place: London, England
Venue: All England Club
Date: June 22- July 6, 2009
Draw Size: 128
Surface: Grass
Prize Money: TBA

Tournament Facts: As the oldest major tennis championships, Wimbledon is widely considered the most prestigious. Held in the summer (from late June to July), Wimbledon is the third Grand Slam event in an annual season. The first Gentlemen’s singles event held at Wimbledon dates back to 1877. In 1884, the All England Club added Ladies Singles and Gentlemen’s Doubles.

Wimbledon is perhaps best known for its history and traditions. One of the longest standing traditions at Wimbledon is the stipulation all players wear almost everything white during matches.

Wimbledon Championships 2008 Review: Tennis betting fans were treated to many sensational matches in 2008, but one match in particular eclipsed all – the 2008 Wimbledon men’s singles final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The epic Championships final was unequivocally one of the greatest matches of all time and one of the longest – at nearly 5 hours of actual playing time and over 7 hours due to rain delays, finishing in darkness – in the history of the tournament. Roger Federer was the King of Grass, entering the tournament with a 65-match unbeaten streak on grass that included five consecutive Wimbledon crowns. He was seeking his sixth Wimbledon title in a row, but for the third year running, Rafael Nadal earned the right to challenge him. Nadal, who was reaching the untold heights of his powers, was not to be denied in his third shot at Federer, masterminding one of the most magnificent victories the hallowed grounds of the All England Club has ever born witness, to dethrone Federer and end his Wimbledon reign. Nadal’s victory (and sadly Federer’s defeat as well) will forevermore be etched in tennis history. In dethroning Federer, Nadal became the first man since Bjorn Borg (1980) to accomplish the Roland Garros-Wimbledon double. He was also the first Spanish male since Manolo Santana in 1966 to lift the coveted trophy.

The Ladies singles final served up one of the most intriguing and emotional sibling rivalries in the game – the Williamses. Venus Williams was the defending champion (and a four-time Wimbledon champion) when she came up against her younger sister Serena Williams in the final. Venus Williams was seeking her fifth Wimbledon crown and as she raced to victory in an hour and 11 minutes with a straight set victory, 7-5, 6-4, she was once again Queen of the Championships.

Past Champions: The Wimbledon Championships have been largely dominated by a handful of players on both the men’s circuit and women’s front over the last decade. Roger Federer and Venus Williams have each picked up the coveted crown five times.

Grand Slam Tennis Betting: French Open 2009
Place: Paris, France
Venue: Roland Garros
Date: May 25 - June 8, 2009
Draw Size: 128
Surface: Red Clay
Prize Money: TBD

Tournament Facts: Roland Garros (also known as the French Open) is the second Grand Slam event in an annual tennis season. Named after the famous French aviator Roland Garros, the tournament is held from mid-May to early June. It is the world’s premier clay court tennis tournament and the most physically demanding of the four Grand Slams.

The French Open began as a national tournament in 1891 – The French Championships. The first women’s tournament was held in 1897. In 1925, after being strictly a domestic event, the French Championships opened to foreign players. But not until 1928 did the French Championships see a new era heralded in and begin to grow in to the global tennis tournament we know today. In 1968, the French Open was the first Grand Slam event to go “open,” allowing both professional and amateur players to compete.

French Open 2008 Review: ATP World No.2 Rafael Nadal clinched his fourth consecutive Roland Garros crown with a consummate performance over World No.1 (at the time) Roger Federer. It was the third time in a row the pair met in the finals of Roland Garros and the most convincing showing by Nadal as he raced to a 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 victory. In winning his fourth Roland Garros title, Nadal became just the second player after the great Bjorn Borg (1978-81) to win four successive titles at the event since it went international in 1925.
After reaching her maiden Grand Slam final in 2007 at Roland Garros Ana Ivanovic came back in 2008 in fine form and won her maiden Grand Slam title with a straight set victory over Dinara Safina.
Past Champions: Many tennis greats have emerged from the hallowed dirt courts to claim the prized trophy. Most recently, the event has been utterly dominated by a player many consider the clay-court King of our time– Rafael Nadal.

In winning the Australian Open, Novak earned the honour of becoming Serbia’s first Grand Slam singles champion.
