One of the hardest things to do as an online sportsbook bettor is to find the winner of a golf tournament. The idea with being consistent in golf, unless you are named Tiger Woods, is to always make the cut and then to always try and finish in the Top Ten.
Golf and NASCAR are a lot alike in that respect. For online betting fans that aren’t afraid to throw a few bucks on a golfer once in a while, the realities of golf betting presents a serious problem. How do we find the winner in a field of up to two-hundred individual athletes?
There is no real answer to this which is why, often times, I prefer to put my online sportsbook dollars on Group Match-Up wagers as well as the various BetUS online sportsbook props.
Below are my best online betting match-up wagers in this weekend’s British Open.
Let’s get to it!
Best Online Match-Up Wagers in the British Open
1. Geoff Ogilvy – 115 vs. Andres Romero – 115 - - On paper it appears that Ogilvy should have Romero over a barrel, right? Let’s not be too hasty here my fellow online sportsbook betting buddies. Romero is a tough guy, tougher than Ogilvy, I believe, and because of that, I’m taking Andres in this match-up. Andres Romero’s best finish in the British Open was third. Why not take it to the next level this year?
Free Pick: Andres Romero
2. Geoff Ogilvy – 115 vs. Adam Scott – 115 - - Scott is a terrific golfer, but Ogilvy has that look about him in this tournament. Although I don’t believe Geoff will do enough to finish ahead of Romero, I do believe he will do enough to finish ahead of Scott. I like Ogilvy in this online wagering match-up.
Free Pick: Geoff Ogilvy
3. Padraig Harrington – 160 vs. Andres Romero + 130 - - To me this is the best match-up wager on the BetUS online sportsbook board because we’re getting Romero at above even money. Harrington will try to defend his British Open Title but at what cost? Padraig has a hurt wrist and Romero could be a beast out there. I’m sticking with Andres.
Free Pick: Andres Romero
4. Phil Mickelson – 130 vs. Jim Furyk Ev - - Mickelson gets all of the press now that Tiger is on the shelf, but Furyk is actually a much better wager in this spot. Nobody is playing as well as Furyk right now and Lefty does have a tendency to make bad decisions at key moments in huge tournaments. I can’t recommend Phil at – 130 versus a very good golfer like Jim Furyk.
Free Pick: Jim Furyk
5. Justin Leonard – 115 vs. Mike Weir – 115 - - Weir has been fantastic but Leonard has the type of game to be successful in the British Open. Heck, the kid, he’s only 36 - - just a baby in golfing terms - - has won this thing! I like Leonard in this situation to beat Weir. Because the online odds are the same, there’s no reason for me not put a few bucks on Leonard.
Free Pick: Justin Leonard
6. Sergio Garcia – 145 vs. Lee Westwood + 115 - - On the BetUS online sportsbook golf betting page, Garcia is favored over every other golfer in match-up online wagering. What does that mean? Not much. Smart online golf betting requires punters to take a look at who has the opportunity to upset at a price. Westwood has that opportunity. He needs only to finish in front of Sergio and we get a nice 15 bucks over the money-line! Why not?
Free Pick: Sergio Garcia
