July 31st Horse Pick of the Day - Del Mar Race 7

by BetUS Staff

Longshots have dominated racing at Del Mar so far this summer. For online racebook fans this could either be a blessing in disguise or a way to seriously dampen the hopes and dreams of making huge online wagering profits.

The worst thing to do in these situations as an online handicapper is to concentrate on the big scores - - the Pick 4s and Pick 6s. It makes sense to try to find a couple of longshots in each race and make an online bet, sometimes two or three online win wagers, on each of those longshots. Why not when the online odds have been ridiculous in the races at Del Mar!

Let’s get to today’s pick of the day!

Del Mar Racetrack – Race 7

Optional Claimer $62,500 n2x

For Fillies and Mares Three-Years Old and Up

6 ½ furlongs on Polytrack

Look Deep - - 12/1 morning line

This four year old filly has a huge chance to pull a major upset in this race. She’s trained by the venerable Julio Canini, is returning to a track where she hasn’t finished off the board in three lifetime races, and gets a decent jock in Martin Pedroza. She hasn’t had the best works in the morning but the fact that she has done her best running at Del Mar, and at this 6 ½ furlong distance, absolutely means something. She’s going to be a huge overlay in this race and could lay well-off, stalk, or even run with the front-runners. That makes her a very viable key horse in all of our online wagers in this race.

Set Play - - 7/2 morning line

Both Set Play and Cry and Catch Me return to the races in this optional claimer. Out of the two, I like Set Play more because her trainer, Peter Miller, is winning at a 29% clip. Bob Baffert, who trains Cry and Catch Me, hasn’t won a race this year at Del Mar. Set Play’s form went south big time after her Del Mar Debutante win last summer. That could mean that either she isn’t the horse a lot of folks thought she was or she just loves Del Mar. Either way, because she will probably keep those 7/2 morning line odds, online racebook fans have to use her.

Steelin’ - - 15/1 morning line

The works in the morning have been absolutely fantastic! That’s the good news. It’s also good news that Steelin’ has done well at Del Mar. The bad news? This gal breaks from the one-hole where she must go to the lead or stalk patiently until something opens up for her at the top of the lane. That could be tricky to do. Still, if the morning line odds hold, she’s a definite use in any online exotic wagers.

Wagering Strategy

Since the Del Mart track is bonkers right now, there’s no reason not to play both Look Deep and Steelin’ to win at what figures to be huge overlaid odds. I’d also play Look Deep to win and place as she figures to have a better chance in this race. I’d use both horses with Set Play in exactas, but because the trifecta looks difficult to hit, I’d pass on that online bet.

Good Luck!
