(CURRENT) (TEAM) (W/L OVERALL & W/L FOR WEEK) (ATS RECORD) (LAST WEEKS RANK)
1: Toronto Argonauts (1-0) (1-0 ATS) It was by no means pretty, but the Argonauts found a way to pull off a hard nosed 23-16 road victory against Eastern Division rival Winnipeg in last weeks CFL betting affair. The passing game was supposed to excel for the Double Blue with the addition of 2007 Most Outstanding Player Kerry Joseph under center, but on a day that they only mustered 184 passing yards, the offence found its production from rookie RB Jamal Robertson who had 102 all-purpose yards and both touchdowns for the Argos. The defense was stout in the victory, giving up only 16 points and forcing four turnovers. The Argos could be off to a fast start with a game against Hamilton and two against Edmonton on the horizon.
Next up: Home vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-1)
2: Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-0) (1-0 ATS) The defending Grey Cup champions opened up play against the Eskimos in Week 1, and were bet down from six-point favorites to four-point choices at the close. They disappointed CFL bettors by beating Edmonton 34-13. The game opened up when Saskatchewan scored 18 straight points in the fourth quarter to put the Eskies away. The defence, which gave up 24.1 PPG a year ago, was relentless against the powerful Edmonton offence, holding it without a major score. Next week will be a much tougher task going into BC Place to take on the perennial powerhouse Lions.
Next up: Away @ BC Lions (0-1)
3: Calgary Stampeders (1-0) (1-0 ATS) Calgary put up the most impressive victory in Week 1 by defeating the defending Western Division champion BC Lions 28-18 on the opening night of the CFL season. New Head Coach John Hufnagel was supposed to bring a high-powered passing game to the table, but RB Joffrey Reynolds and QB Henry Burris stole the show with 187 combined rushing yards to spur the Stamps offence to three majors. A makeshift defence was supposed to be a problem for Calgary, but the unit kept both Jarious Jackson and Buck Pierce in check all night long. The Stampeders went just 2-7 a year ago on the road, and head to Commonwealth Stadium to take on the Eskies in their home opener. Next up: Away @ Edmonton (0-1)
4: British Columbia Lions (0-1) (0-1 ATS) It was a disappointing start to the 2008 season for Head Coach Wally Buono and the Lions. Buck Pierce was supposed to run the offence with Dave Dickenson removed from the mix, but his injury in the 2nd quarter opened the door for Jarious Jackson to go back under centre. Neither QB had much luck, combining for just 51.5% completions and 255 passing yards. One would like to think that this game was just an anomaly for the 2006 Grey Cup champs, but a game with the 2007 champion Riders at home next week could prove otherwise.
Next up: Home vs. Saskatchewan (1-0)
5: Montreal Alouettes (1-0) (1-0 ATS) The Alouettes kicked off the 2008 season in style, crashing the party at Ivor-Wynne Stadium by beating the Tiger-Cats 33-10. QB Anthony Calvillo, once a member of the Ti-Cats, moved into 2nd place in CFL history for career passing yards with 53,343 yards. Calvillo hooked up with WR Kerry Watkins six times for 102 yards and two TDs, but RB Avon Cobourne was the star, rushing for 107 yards to go with his 55 receiving yards. Montreal shouldn’t get too excited though, as the game against Hamilton is a far cry from the test that Kevin Glenn and the Blue Bombers will offer this week.
Next up: Home vs. Winnipeg (0-1)
6: Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-1) (0-1 ATS) Kevin Glenn returned from his broken arm suffered at the end of the 2007 season and threw for 321 yards against the vaunted Toronto defence, but also threw three costly interceptions en route to the Blue Bombers 23-16 Week 1 defeat. RB Charles Roberts had a respectable game, rushing for 76 yards, but the offence clearly missed WR Milt Stegall, who missed the game with various nagging injuries. He could return to the lineup this week, and the Bombers will need him when they pay a visit to their Eastern rival Montreal.
Next up: Road @ Montreal (1-0)
7: Edmonton Eskimos (0-1) (0-1 ATS) QB Ricky Ray and the Edmonton Eskimos were held without a touchdown in their opening game defeat in Saskatchewan. Ray only threw for 249 yards after averaging 281 yards per game a year ago. Originally tabbed as a potential sleeper in the Western Division, the Eskies need to get back on their feet quickly with a win over Calgary, because two games with both Toronto and BC in the next five weeks could spell an early end to the season for Edmonton.
Next up: Home vs. Calgary (1-0)
8: Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-1) (0-1 ATS) Things were supposed to improve for the Ti-Cats who went just 3-15 a year ago, but if Week 1’s 33-10 defeat by Montreal was any indicator, it’s going to be another long season in Steeltown. Casey Printers was supposed to be the savior for Hamilton, but was replaced when the game was out of hand. Canadian RB Jesse Lumsden got off to a tough start, only rushing nine times for 36 yards. He will be the key to whether Hamilton breaks a road-losing streak that dates back to 2006.
Next up: Road @ Toronto (1-0)
