NHL Hockey Betting – Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals
by Mike Rose

Two teams at the top of the Southeast division will meet in our nation’s capital Thursday night when the Washington Capitals (5-4-2) host the division leading Carolina Hurricanes (7-3-2). Carolina just got finished with a home and home with Toronto that resulted in two sports betting wins for Hurricanes bettors this week. The Capitals are coming off of two straight road losses against the Sabres and the Senators and their return home comes at a good time.
After scoring just four goals combined in their three previous games, the Toronto defense proved to be just the thing needed for a sputtering Hurricanes attack. Carolina scored 11 goals in their home and home against the Maple Leafs, good enough to put both their games ‘over’ the ‘total’ off the NHL lines virtually singlehandedly. The Hurricanes top scorer this season is LW Ray Whitney, whose 11 points leaves him as the only man on the roster with double-digits.
Although the Hurricanes have given up three or more goals in 10 of their 12 NHL wagering games this season, the ‘under’ has cashed for pro hockey gamblers in five of the Hurricanes last eight games. Goalies Cam Ward and Michael Leighton have been serviceable for Carolina bettors with a combined 2.62 GAA and a .920 save percentage. D Niclas Wallin also has been a boon to the team with his +/- of 10 that’s currently tied for the best mark in the NHL.
Star LW Alexander Ovechkin gets most of the attention on the Capitals offense, but it’s another young LW named Alexander from Russia who is the Capitals leading point scorer and near the top of the NHL leaderboard for scoring this year, Alexander Semin. Semin has tallied an impressive eight goals and nine assists in just 11 games so far, and is on his way to career highs across the board. His play has contributed to seven of the team’s 11 games going over the ‘total’ per the closing pro hockey odds.
Defensively, Washington has struggled this season with goaltenders Jose Theodore and Brent Johnson teaming for a 3.12 GAA and a .890 save percentage through 12 games. However, last game Capitals bettors almost were saved by great goaltending, with Johnson stopping 42 of 44 shots before letting in a goal in overtime in a 2-1 road loss.
NHL Betting trends to be aware of for this game are: Carolina is 21-7 over its last 28 games against a team with a losing record, Washington is 11-3 in its last 14 home games, and the home team is 7-2 for NHL moneyline bettors in these teams last nine head-to-head meetings.
Pro hockey wagering lines have the Capitals as -155 home favorites with a game ‘total’ of six goals shaded towards the under at -125 odds.
