Nov. 8 Hockey Update

I am Hockey Guy, a Canadian who has decided to keep fellow BetUS bettors up on the latest hockey info and action. Here are my thoughts for this week, as there's a lot going on in the world of the NHL:

-How hot are the Ottawa Senators? They lead the league in goals for and goals against, that's insane! The Sens have been so far ahead of anyone in the league, I would say they are a solid pick to plunk money down on to win the cup.

-Nashville has fallen on hard times since their lightning quick start to the season. They have dipped to 8-2-3, hardly impressive after beginning 8-0. Look for them to be a middle-of-the-pack team this season.

-Eric Staal has single-handedly made the Carolina Hurricanes relevant again in hockey. It's stunning to think this team can go from being picked to finish in the bottom five overall, to contending for a Stanley Cup. Staal is a second-year player who is playing with veterans Corey Stillman and Eric Cole, forming one of the most potent lines in the league. I doubt the team can keep up this pace, but I am certain Staal can.

-Wayne Gretzky's first season as a head coach has been anything but impressive. Nevertheless, he is doing a decent job with a less than stocked team talent-wise. Seeing as he is managing partner, I don't think his job is in jeopardy right now.

-Would you be surprised to learn that the Montreal Canadiens are tops in the Eastern Conference? I am as well. They are undersized, have no blue line scorers and have six rookies. Yet, they are doing it with one line: Koivu, Kovalev and Zednik.

-The race for rookie-of-the-year between Sydney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin will go down to the wire. While one is a playmaker and the other  a sniper, they are both impressing so far and should be hall-of-famers in 15 years.
