NHL Furious Playoff Picks 2008 – Crack Out The Brooms!

by Tim Furious

Pittsburgh Penguins (47-27-8) vs. New York Rangers (42-27-13)

Thursday, May 1st --- Madison Square Garden, NYC --- 7:00pm EST

Series: Pit 3-0

NHL Betting Line: Pittsburgh -120

You’d think that the Penguins would’ve lost some momentum after such a long break between online betting series after they swept the Ottawa Senators in four. Especially when they ran into a supposed playoff juggernaut in the New York Rangers. But going 7-0 SU in your past seven playoff games is no laughing matter to anyone. And though this was supposedly a series that would stretch to seven games, the Rangers haven’t shown the punch and drive that Pittsburgh has.

Jaromir Jagr can say what he wants, but his team’s offense has been abysmal and the defense was nothing short of a disaster in Game 3. Letting any team outscore you 12-7 over three games is embarrassing, especially when you’re supposed to be a team of defensive specialists.

The truth is that Pittsburgh has all the momentum, and Henrik Lundqvist looks absolutely rattled. The Pens are 4-2 SU in the past 6 games on the road and are barreling towards glory and immortality. Despite what you can say about them defensively, this team looks ridiculous right now and everyone on the Pens betting bandwagon will have a reason to cheer tonight.

Detroit Red Wings (54-21-7) vs. Colorado Avalanche (44-31-7)

Thursday, May 1st --- Pepsi Center, Denver --- 10:00pm EST

Series: Det 3—0

NHL Betting Line: Detroit -125

Nice effort, Colorado. You know, if you define “effort” as having two of your best players sit out with nagging injuries, and your best young player hits the shelf with an injury while your goalie implodes on himself allowing 13 goals in three games. That’s 4.3 goals against per game if you’re counting at home.

Detroit is the real deal, combining defense and offense with elegant coaching that has both a nice correlation of fierce finesse to it. Detroit is 8-1 SU in the past 10 games with the Avalanche, and anyone hoping that this series would go the distance has been horribly corrected (myself included).

Colorado can’t withstand Detroit, and the Wings are a merciless team. Expect them to put Colorado out of their misery tonight while the Avs put up a decent fight.
