NHL Original Six Battle - Montreal @ New York

Montreal Canadiens @ New York Rangers 7:30 PM ET

Two of the Eastern Conference’s best teams will meet in historic New York this Wednesday night in a great sports betting matchup when the New York Rangers (24-14-3) face the Montreal Canadiens (22-10-6). Montreal has been very friendly to NHL bettors of late winning four of its last five games, which includes three road wins. Meanwhile, the Rangers have been on a bit of a slide lately losing four of their last six heading into Wednesday night’s match-up.

Recently, Montreal received the great news that four of its players were named starters for the Eastern Conference in the NHL All-Star Game. RW Alexei Kovalev, D Andrei Markov, D Mike Komisarek, and G Carey Price were all named starters for the game to be played in Montreal’s Bell Centre on January 25th. Kovalev leads the way for the Canadiens with 28 points on the season, while Canadiens bettors have watched Markov, Komisarek, and Price combine to form one of the NHL’s stingiest defenses to date.

Price currently boasts one of the best numbers for a goaltender this season, posting a 16-4-5 record to go along with a 2.30 GAA and a .921 save percentage. However with Price out the last two games, the Montreal defense struggled and G Jaroslav Halak paid the brunt of it giving up nine goals.

After being in first place in the Atlantic Division much of the season, the Rangers have recently relinquished their grip on the division lead thanks to their recent slide. RW Nikolai Zherdev is currently the team’s leader in points with 35 (12 G 23 A) through 41 games and has one of the best +/- numbers on the team with a +5. Rangers bettors have also seen centers Scott Gomez and Chris Drury put up impressive numbers with each tallying 27 points.

One of the league’s best goaltenders is having another good season in Henrik Lundqvist. Lundqvist currently has a pro hockey betting record of 20-11-3 with a 2.59 GAA and a .911 save percentage midway through the season. Lundqvist was masterful Monday night against the high scoring Penguins, stopping 27 shots and shutting Pittsburgh out for the first time this season in a 4-0 NHL wagering win for the Rangers.

Some NHL betting trends for NHL bettors to know before betting this game include: The home team is 7-1 in the last eight games between Montreal and New York, the ‘under’ is 14-5-1 in the Rangers last 20 home games, and the ‘under’ is 17-7 in Montreal’s last 24 games overall.

NHL odds have the Rangers as a -140 home favorite on the moneyline in this spot with a game ‘total’ of 5.5 goals shaded toward the under at -130 odds.
