Ice Hockey Betting - Philadelphia Flyers vs. New Jersey Devils
by Mike Rose

Two long-time rivals will take the ice together Friday night when the New Jersey Devils (5-1-0) host the winless Philadelphia Flyers (0-3-3). Philadelphia is currently the only team in the NHL yet to register a win this NHL wagering season despite having three games tied after regulation. The Devils are once again getting it done like they always have, through solid defense, opportunistic offense, and a first ballot Hall of Famer in between the pipes.
After six games, Flyer games have been higher scoring on average than any other team’s, with an average tally of 8.2 goals per contest. Even with the linesmakers early season adjustments to the NHL betting line for the ‘total’, the over has still cashed in five of their six games. The Flyers last game, a 7-6 loss to San Jose, epitomizes the brand of hockey the Flyers have played this season with each team tallying a goal in every period; over bettors were able to cash their tickets after the first period of play. To date, C Danny Briere has been the team’s leading scorer with seven points (3 G, 4 A) through six games.
The 29 goals allowed after just six games leaves the Flyers with the league’s most porous defense, statistically speaking. The Flyers have juggled goaltenders Antero Niittymaki and Martin Biron, each have three starts, trying to find an answer to their backstop woes to no avail. Flyers gamblers have noticed these problems and have watched the team not win a game SU or ATS per the closing pro hockey wagering odds this season.
New Jersey is certainly a team without goaltending problems with legendary Martin Brodeur tending its net. Brodeur is atop or close to the top of the leaderboard in every goaltending category with a sparkling 1.31 GAA, a .942 save percentage, two shutouts, and a dazzling 5-1-0 record. With Brodeur in goal this season, only one Devils game has gone over the ‘total’ per the NHL gambling odds.
With the Devils only allowing 1.5 goals per game, the best average in the NHL, Devils bettors haven’t had to rely on much offensive production to cash tickets this season. LW Zach Parise is the Devils leading scorer with seven points after six games (4 G, 3 A) with two of those coming on the power play. The Devils are 2-0-0 at home so far this season.
Current NHL betting trends include the Flyers going 1-10 SU over their last 11 games, the under is 17-8-3 in the Devils last 28 games against the Eastern Conference, and the Flyers are 4-18 SU in their last 22 meetings against New Jersey.
The NHL line has the Devils as -175 home moneyline favorites in the game with a game ‘total’ of 5.5 goals shaded toward the under at a price of -130.
