Manning, Giants vs. Favre, Jets – Head to Head

New York, New York - it's a wonderful town. The Giants are up and the Jets are down. Will it stay that way, now that Brett Favre is in the fold for the guys in Kelly Green? How close can the records between these two teams be?

The news in New York that overshadows all others is the trade that brought in Brett Favre on Thursday. That may not only change the offensive approach of this team, but perhaps also the confidence level of this group. But how much will it really change the end result?

The Jets may not have drawn the toughest schedule, but there are at least a few out-of-division games that are going to be a concern. A September 22 visit to San Diego is going to be rough, to say the least, and the Jets' best hope is that San Diego gets off to as slow a start as it did last year. Another trip, to Nashville to play the Titans, will probably not result in a win for them. The December 21 game they play at Seattle is a situation that could go a couple of different ways, depending on whether the Seahawks have clinched the NFC West title by that time.

Inside the AFC East, the Jets can probably be counted on to lose at least three of their six games. I'm figuring a split against Buffalo might even be optimistic, and something very unusual would have to happen to avoid getting swept by New England. Perhaps a sweep against Miami isn't stretching it much, since the Dolphins will be in a rebuilding mode, at best.

That leaves a number of games that could be tough for this team, even at home. Arizona and Cincinnati are not going to be pushovers for them. Neither will St. Louis or Denver. San Francisco could be a struggling team, but Oakland might be well improved, depending on how far JaMarcus Russell has progressed. Those are two west coast trips.

Remember that the Giants got into the playoffs as a wild card; therefore they are not playing the "first place" schedule. They are in a division that might, top to bottom, be stronger than the one the Jets are in, so a 3-3 NFC East finish wouldn't be out of the question. The Giants have to go to Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Minnesota. There might be a couple of losses in there. Home games against Cincinnati, Seattle, San Francisco, Baltimore and Carolina are all winnable. Of course, one must keep in mind that they were not too strong at the Meadowlands last year, though eleven straight wins away from home can't be ignored either.

The Jets brought in offensive line help in the persons of Alan Faneca and Damien Woody, which certainly helps to protect the aging Favre’s back. But I still don't believe that much in running back Thomas Jones. The defense has holes, and unless Vernon Gholston instantly supplies them with a pass rush, they're going to suffer in that area. Favre suffered through a couple of lean years in Green Bay with personnel that was found wanting before pulling off the surprising 13-3 regular season finish in ’07. Sure, he’ll connect more down the field with people like Jerricho Cotchery and Laveranues Coles, but he’s going to throw his share of interceptions too – possibly more than Chad Pennington would have been expected to.
