Some Moves Make NFL Teams Good Future Bets

Yes, just last month the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals to win the Super Bowl, but that doesn’t mean anything for gamblers any more.

It’s time for bettors to once again take a look at the odds on teams to win Super Bowl XLIV. Why? Because free agency has begun and some NFL teams are making serious moves to solidify themselves as major players for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Let’s take a look at the odds on some teams that have already made a splash in the free agency market.

NFL: Free Agency

Baltimore Ravens +2000 - - The Ravens have to be considered one of the top teams to win the Super Bowl in 2010 after re-signing Ray Lewis and signing away center Matt Birk from the Vikings. The Birk signing is absolutely huge for this team. With Birk joining an already terrific offensive line, and quarterback Joe Flacco going into his second season, the Ravens are a terrific bet at 20 to 1.

Buffalo Bills +6500 - - Terrell Owens will help opposite Lee Evans, but wide receiver isn’t the biggest issue that the Bills face. They still need to secure that defense by signing a terrific linebacker and their corners aren’t very good.

Dallas Cowboys +1200 - - The Cowboys got rid of some fluff by cutting Adam Jones and Terrell Owns. Then, they went out and signed a top player in Keith Brooking from Atlanta. Brooking will add a lot of class to that Cowboy’s line backing corp. Tony Romo should have a good season without Owens breathing down his neck.

Denver Broncos +3000 - - Denver did what it had to do by signing Brian Dawkins to play in the defensive backfield with star Champ Baily, but they haven’t addressed their offensive issues just yet. Jay Cutler’s whining has turned the fans and media in Denver against the talented quarterback. Its going to be an interesting year in the mile high city as Mike Shanahan is not at the helm for the first time in over a decade.

Kansas City Chiefs +1000 - - Okay, technically it wasn’t a free agent signing when they picked-up Matt Cassell, but it was a huge move for Kansas City. Enough to make them contenders? No way. Cassell could get beat-up in KC which means he’s more likely to go the way of Jay Schroeder than Jake Delhomme.

New Orleans Saints +2200 - - The odds are too low on New Orleans for me to say they deserve betting dollars just yet, but they made a few huge moves. First, they re-signed LB Jonathan Vilma, saving a #1 draft pick, and OT John Stinchcomb and WR Devery Henderson. Then, they went out and signed CB Jabari Greer from Buffalo. Greer isn’t a shut down guy but he’s better than anything else New Orleans has at corner.

New York Giants +1200 - - The G-Men should be considered a top contender after signing terrific linebacker Michael Boley, DT Rocky Bernard, and DT Chris Canty. This team already is dynamite offensively. Now, they’ve gotten way better on the defensive side. Boley is going to be a star in New York. The odds are terrific, gamblers should think about betting on the Giants right now.
