Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets 4:15 ET CBS

Weather: Mostly cloudy with a 50% chance of rain; highs around 50.

The final week of the NFL online betting season has arrived, and the AFC East Championship will be on the line when the Miami Dolphins (10-5, 7-8 ATS) lock horns with the NY Jets (9-6, 7-8 ATS) in the Meadowlands; kick-off is slated for 4:15 ET and the game can be seen nationally on CBS.

Miami can pull off the unthinkable with a win in this spot by winning the AFC East crown after compiling a 1-15 mark just a short season ago. The Jets would secure themselves a playoff spot if they pick up a win and could win the division if the Patriots lose at Buffalo.

Miami went on the road and picked up a solid road win and cover against a game Kansas City club in Week 16 NFL betting action, while the Jets really hampered their hopes of winning the AFC East by dropping their contest at Seattle.

These clubs last met way back in Week 1 of this season where the Jets escaped Dolphin Stadium with a 20-14 road win and cover as three-point road favorites. Both field generals had solid outings as QB Brett Favre completed 15 of 22 passes for 194 yards and 2 TDs and QB Chad Pennington completed 26 of 43 passes for 251 yards and a pair of scores against his former mates. Miami’s been atrocious for NFL bettors at NY having won just one of their L/10 trips ATS. That said; the road team is 4-1-1 ATS the L/6 in this series.

1st Quarter:

This game started off as a snoozer as all four of the Dolphins and Jets possessions ended up in three and outs. That said; lightning struck at the four minute mark when QB Brett Favre connected with WR Jerricho Cotchery on what looked to be a blown coverage, and he didn’t have one Miami defender threaten to tackle him as he scampered 73-yards to pay dirt.

The Dolphins did absolutely nothing once again with its next possession, and handed the ball back to the Jets in less than a minute.

The 1st quarter came to a close with the Jets taking over at their own 11-yard line.….

2nd QUARTER

RB Thomas Jones rattled off a 7-yard gain on the first play of the 2nd quarter, and then Favre slung one into WR Laveranues Coles who got tackled 22-yards later at the Jets own 40. WR Chansi Stuckey picked up 15 more on a WR screen, and then the Jets offense got cute with some flea flicker action which saw seldom used WR Brad Smith get open for a 23-yard gain. Miami’s defense stiffened in its red zone and held the Jets to a FG attempt. K Jay Feely was true from 33-yards out and the Jets found themselves up 10 with half the 2nd quarter remaining.

After a solid 27-yard return by WR Ted Ginn Jr. on the kick-off, QB Chad Pennington’s first pass of the drive was intercepted and returned to Miami’s 49-yard line. Miami’s defense stiffened and forced the punt, but they got pinned at their own 4-yard line. After doing nothing again, the Jets set up shop on the Dolphins side of the field with under a minute left in the half.

Favre completed a couple of short passes, and then found TE Chris Baker in the middle of the field for a 22-yard gain. RB Jones rushed to the other hash mark to make Feely’s kick easier, and the veteran kicker calmly nailed the 19-yarder to give the Jets a 13-0 break at the half

MIAMI 0 NEW YORK 13

3rd Quarter

The Dolphins misfortunes continued to start the second half when QB Pennington’s first pass was intercepted and returned to their own 40. After a 20-yard pass interference penalty, Favre failed to complete a pass and K Feely came in and converted his third FG attempt of the game.

To make matters worse, KR Ginn Jr. fumbled the return and the Jets recovered it at the Dolphins 32-yard line. The Dolphins defense gave the team a punchers chance by holding them to another long field goal….

After scoring 38-points in the frigid temps at Arrowhead last week, the Dolphins offense had tons of confidence heading into this afternoon’s cold weather affair. That said; the offense had done nothing up until this point, and continued to do just that on their seventh possession of the game. Can you say three and out? Pennington and the Jets offense sure can….

MIAMI 0 NEW YORK 19

4TH QUARTER

The Dolphins had a couple of possessions end on 4th down plays on the Jets side of the field, and that was the closest they ever came to cracking the scoreboard in this one. Miami killed itself with turnovers in all four quarters, and Pennington had a horrific day in his return to the Meadowlands. If New England somehow managed to lose to Buffalo earlier in the day, Favre and the Jets are the 2008 AFC East Champs!!!
