If you asked NFL betting fans who led the league in receiving yards last season most of them, off the top of their heads, would likely say Randy Moss - and they would be wrong.
Moss may have blown everyone away with 23 touchdown receptions last year, but it was actually Reggie Wayne who led the NFL in receiving yards. Wayne clipped Moss’ final total by 17 yards, with 1,510 yards to Moss’ 1,493 yards. They were so close that it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they are the co-favorites on the NFL odds for most receiving yards this season at +450.
Moss and Wayne may be the favorites, but there are also question marks hovering above both of them. With Moss the big question is whether or not the Patriots’ passing offense can be so dominant and put up huge numbers again. With Wayne the question centers around Marvin Harrison. Wayne dominated last season with his star teammate sidelined, but will the return of Harrison to the starting lineup every week hinder Wayne’s production?
There are also big questions surrounding another top favorite on the NFL odds, Chad Johnson. The disgruntled Bengals receiver is listed at +500 after another productive season in which he finished third in the league in receiving yards with 1,440. A year earlier Johnson led all receivers with 1,369 yards. The trouble with Johnson is that you really don’t know what you’re going to get this year after the ruckus he caused during the offseason with his trade demands. After he wasn’t traded away by the Bengals he may not fit in quite as well as he has in the past.
One very interesting pick on the NFL odds right now is speedy Texans receiver Andre Johnson at +1200. Last season Johnson was off to an amazing start before injuries started to take their toll. Johnson ended up playing in only nine games, but he still posted 851 receiving yards. That comes out to 94.6 yards per game, which is slightly higher than Wayne’s average of 94.4 yards per game. If Johnson can stay healthy for the entire season and put up those same kind of numbers he could be a huge value pick for bettors.
