Pivots in pain

Here’s a rundown of this week’s quarterback aches and pains from around the NFL . . .

Byron Leftwich -- Jacksonville Jaguars -- Out (ankle)

It’s quite possible that Leftwich won’t return to the field this season, which leaves the Jaguars’ fate in David Garrard’s hands. Garrard went 11-of-20 for 116 yards passing, two touchdowns, and one interception last week in the Jags’ win over the Browns. Nothing special, but he did toss a game-winning TD strike in the third quarter. However, Garrard will have his hands full against the smothering Indianapolis Colts this weekend.

Jay Fiedler -- New York Jets -- Out (right shoulder)

Fiedler is now scheduled to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. That means Brooks Bollinger will be the Jets’ quarterback the rest of the way, with a possible pity start tossed to Vinny Testaverde at some point before the season mercifully ends.

Marc Bulger -- St. Louis Rams -- Out (right shoulder)

Bulger’s shoulder injury could sideline him for the rest of the season, and there’s little reason for the team to rush him back at this point. Watch for Ryan Fitzpatrick to get another start for the Rams against the Vikings on Sunday. Fitzpatrick went 21-of-36 for 163 yards passing and an interception in their loss to the Redskins last week.

Steve McNair -- Tennessee Titans -- Questionable (back)

McNair might be listed as questionable for Week 14 with a back injury, but you’d think he’d have to be pretty banged up to miss a start against the woeful Texans. Watch McNair’s progress over the next couple of days at practice before making a decision on him or the Titans.

Trent Dilfer -- Cleveland Browns -- Probable (knee)

Healthy or not, Dilfer will be the Browns’ backup this weekend as the team gives Charlie Frye another shot at the starter’s role. Frye went 13-of-20 for 226 yards passing in the Browns’ loss to the Jaguars last week, throwing two touchdown passes and zero interceptions in the game. Unfortunately for Frye, he won’t have Braylon Edwards to throw to against the Bengals, as the rookie wide receiver is now out for the season.

Brett Favre -- Green Bay Packers -- Probable (right hand)

It doesn’t look like Favre will miss time with his bruised hand. Imagine how bad the 2-10 Packers would look without him in the starting lineup.

Tom Brady -- New England Patriots -- Probable (right shoulder)

We’ll report on Brady’s injuries as soon as a legitimate one is listed by the team.

Ben Roethlisberger -- Pittsburgh Steelers -- Probable (right thumb)
Charlie Batch -- Pittsburgh Steelers -- Probable (right hand)

Big Ben will have to wear a protective brace on his thumb again this weekend, but anything’s better than putting Tommy Maddox back into a game. Watch for Batch to be the backup on Sunday against the Bears.
