One of the teams in the NFC East that is undergoing a transition period is the Washington Redskins (9-7 SU, 7-7-2 ATS), lining up for their first season under new coach Jim Zorn. Will this deter the 'Skins from making a return to the playoffs? We will examine that today.

The Redskins went through quite a bit in the 2007 sports betting season. Of course, the lowest moment was the death of former Pro Bowl safety Sean Taylor. In the aftermath of Taylor's murder, the team responded with emotional performances in its remaining games, and with four straight football betting wins to close the season, was able to sneak in as a wild card participant, losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Seattle Seahawks.

At the sports betting season's conclusion, Joe Gibbs, the coach who had returned to the team after leading Washington to three Super Bowl titles, retired. It was assumed that offensive coordinator Al Saunders might get the job, but instead it went to Jim Zorn, who is installing the West Coast offense, something of a departure from the ground-oriented attack that was Gibbs' trademark. The team went out and put its money where its mouth was in the draft, selecting two of the better wide receivers available - Devin Thomas of Michigan State and Malcolm Kelly of Oklahoma, along with standout tight end Fred Davis of USC. Remember that the Redskins also have Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle-El and Chris Cooley coming back. The running game should be fine with Clinton Portis, who can be dominant when healthy, but the big question mark is quarterback Jason Campbell, who got hurt last year and watched while the team responded better to backup QB Todd Collins. Campbell hardly played an offense like this at Auburn, and he is generally not considered a passer suited to the West Coast style. So Zorn and his offensive coordinator, Sherman Smith, have a job on their hands.

Gregg Williams, the defensive guru who spent four years in the nation's capital building a defense that enabled this team to contend, has moved on. But the 'Skins have some talent on the stop unit. The secondary, even without Taylor, is outstanding. Laron Landry, Carlos Rogers and Shawn Springs were all first-round draft choices, and the defensive line, though taking on some age, is capable. London Fletcher, who mans the middle linebacker spot in the 4-3 scheme, is one of the best at his position. If the Redskins are going to have a problem, it won't likely be because they can't stop anybody.

One special teams addition is well worth noting. Jerome Mathis, who made the Pro Bowl as a kick returner while with Houston in 2005, was signed as a free agent, and is going to constitute an immediate upgrade in terms of field position. And speaking of field position, Washington is hoping that Durant Brooks, drafted in Round 6 out of Georgia Tech, has the makings of a Pro Bowl punter.

Jon Jansen, the right tackle, has to rebound from his severe ankle injury. If he can, he will give the Redskins two great anchors on the offensive line (along with Chris Samuels). That will be of great assistance to Campbell. It is a matter of whether the young quarterback can learn the offense quickly enough, because many of the other components would seem to be in place. Is he ready? We're not particularly high on him, to be honest. But the 'Skins can get to the .500 mark, and perhaps beyond, even if he is slow in coming around.
