TEASE ME!

November 28, 2009

Remember that the team we're using is on the left, with the "teased" number and the opponent in parentheses and the home team in CAPS.

Here is a FOUR-TEAM, 13-POINT TEASER where you have to LAY 3/2 (-150) in this college football betting proposition:

  • Oklahoma State +20.5  (OKLAHOMA)
  • SOUTHERN CAL  pick  (UCLA)
  • New Mexico +57.5  (TCU)
  • FLORIDA ATLANTIC -1  (Western Kentucky)

I probably won't need this many points, but it's a gift when I have an Oklahoma State squad that has both Kendall Hunter and Keith Toston in the backfield right now, and on top of that, I have the quarterback edge with veteran Zac Robinson over freshmen Landry Jones.

Yes, I realize that there is no air of invincibility surrounding USC these days, not that there would be one that mattered to a UCLA team that has beaten better Trojan squads than this. Still, USC is much more functional offensively, and I am still not satisfied in the ability of the Bruins' offense, whether it's under the tutelage of Norm Chow or not, to fully exploit the cracks in the USC defensive armor.

You know, sometimes you've just got to say, "WTF?" and go for it. As good as TCU is, they haven't scored 58 points this year, or for the last five years, at least against a Division I team (They hung 67 on Stephen F. Austin - the school, not the individual - last season).

As for FAU, I'm figuring, if you've got Howard Schnellenberger as a coach and you can't beat Western Kentucky, with a lame duck head coach (Dave Elson was fired) straight-up, then you simply don't belong in major college football. I think I'm going to try to show up for this one. Can I "tweet" from there?

Here is a THREE-TEAM, TEN-POINT TEASER in which you will get ten points toward your side on three different games. In the college football betting parlance, you will LAY 6/5 here, so it's -120.

  • Notre Dame +20  (STANFORD)
  • Virginia Tech -5  (VIRGINIA)
  • South Florida +16.5  (MIAMI)

You know, say what you will about Notre Dame's coaching situation and who is going to interview for it (Brian Billick? Jon Gruden? Brian Kelly?). The Irish still has one of the nation's best passers in Jimmy Clausen, who has the capability to outduel Andrew Luck with superior receivers. The Irish has a way of making these kinds of games close, and we don't want to be swayed by the way Stanford stomped all over USC. Yes, this would be Toby Gerhart's Heisman "statement," but no matter.

Honestly, with all the problems Virginia has had on offense, including not being able to protect its passer (39 sacks allowed) I don't think I am looking for any heroic efforts in what could well be Al Groh's last game as Cavalier coach. Sure, the Cavs do a decent job against opposing running attacks, but that defense is going to spend so much time on the field that it will be worn down by Ryan Williams, who might be a Heisman contender if he wasn't a freshman.

Look, South Florida has been overwhelmed by superior personnel on the other side of the football, but on an overall basis, I'm not ready to say Miami qualifies. Jacory Harris makes plays but is also mistake-prone (17 INT's) and multi-dimensional BJ Daniels can be a tough guy for the other team to handle. The Bulls are known for giving a little something extra at Raymond James Stadium, and to Jim Leavitt, who built this program from nothing, this is a major recruiting game.
