NCAA Football Week 6 - Memphis Tigers at UAB Blazers

The Memphis Tigers (2-3 SU, 2-2 ATS) will try to get to the .500 mark on Thursday night as they travel to face the Blazers of Alabama-Birmingham (1-4 SU, 2-2 ATS) in a Conference USA matchup in NCAA college football that is slated to kick off at 8 PM ET at Legion Field (artificial turf) in Birmingham, AL.

Memphis is finding its way along the ground, were Curtis Steele rambled for 203 yards on Saturday, turning back Arkansas State in what was not an insignificant win for the Tigers, inasmuch as ASU was a team who had handled Texas A&M in the opener. Steele's emergence should take some pressure off Arkelon Hall, whose 1247 passing yards are 12th in the country.

This is all pretty good news for Memphis, since UAB simply can not stop quality attacks. There are only two teams in the country that have given up more passing yards than the Blazers' 1455, or who have allowed more per passing attempt. Saturday's effort against South Carolina may have looked like an improvement, but USC's Stephen Garcia was making his first extended appearance.

We respect the all-around abilities of UAB signal-caller Joe Webb, who's racked up 423 rushing yards already. But Webb has a long way to go as a passer, and has tossed five interceptions in his last two starts against Division I competition. Without a complementary rushing game to count on, we doubt the Blazers' ability to trade points, as they will almost certainly have to.

UAB has had some mastery in this series (6-1-1 ATS in last eight meetings). But Memphis has the edges on offense, and a sizable edge on the defensive side. They'll make enough stops to make the difference here, so we'll lay the points with Memphis, the five-point favorite in the BetUS NCAA football betting odds.
