BetUS NCAA Football Odds: TENNESSEE -3

Very few college football series have been as one-sided as Tennessee's dominance over Kentucky. The Volunteers have, in fact, won 24 straight meetings between these two SEC schools, and the signs aren't bad for the Vols this time around either, despite Kentucky's recent resurgence, which has seen the 'Cats win five of the last six games, covering five in the NCAA sportsbook as well.

Here are some of the trends as they relate to this matchup:

  • TENN has won and covered four of its last six games
  • TENN has played four of its last six games OVER the total
  • TENN has played 15 of its last 22 games UNDER the total
  • TENN has lost eight of its last nine road games SU
  • TENN has played six of its last seven road games UNDER the total
  • KY has won and covered five of its last six games SU

Also...

  • TENN has covered nine of the last 13 meetings
  • TENN has won the last 24 meetings SU
  • TENN has covered four of the last six meetings as the road team

With their 31-16 win over Vanderbilt, Tennessee not only got past its awful effort against Ole Miss the week before, but also put one more week of distance between themselves and the three things who were arrested for holding up a gas station and later kicked off the team.

Jonathan Crompton started off the season extremely tentative, because coach Lane Kiffin had no confidence in him. He has progressively gotten better, and in his last four games he's thrown eleven TD's with just one interception, which is sizzling.

Kentucky has had a problem stopping quality rushing attacks (4.6 ypc allowed), which presents a clear problem for them, because Tennessee running back Montario Hardesty is closing his season with a flourish, rambling for 171 yards against Vanderbilt. He's workhorse, and with 1127 yards, he's already more than quadrupled his output from last season.

One of the things coach Kiffin has brought to Knoxville is an improved defense, in the person of his father Monte, for years the brains behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' coverage schemes. Those schemes have befuddled many quarterbacks this season, Tim Tebow among them, so they will likely be too complicated for freshman Morgan Newton, who threw three TD passes but had only nine completions total against Georgia last week, and has averaged just six yards an attempt. Watch the Vols cheat on him and force a few miscues.

Both these teams are going to the post-season, and both are over .500, but Tennessee is the team that could have a much better record right now. They're starting to do the things that thwarted them earlier, and they should be able to continue their run here. We'll go with Tennessee, the three-point favorite.
