NCAA Week 5 Football - Purdue Boilermakers at Notre Dame Fighting Irish
by Tim Furious

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS), thwarted in their trip to Lansing last weekend, will try to rebound on Saturday when they play host to the Purdue Boilermakers (2-1 SU, 1-1 ATS) in NCAA college football action that is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 PM ET at Notre Dame Stadium (natural turf) in South Bend, IN.

BetUS NCAAF Betting Odds: NOTRE DAME -1, Total 46
Here are some of the NCAA college football betting trends as they relate to this matchup:
* PUR is 2-3-1 ATS in its last six road games
* PUR has lost five of its last seven road games SU
* ND has won four of its last five games SU
* ND has lost 12 of its last 17 games SU
* ND has played four of its last five games UNDER the total
* ND has covered four of its last 15 home games
* ND has lost six of its last nine home games SU
Also....
* ND has won five of the last six meetings SU as the home team
Notre Dame appeared to have been operating pretty well, having just come off a 35-17 win over Michigan. But Jimmy Clausen was just 10 for 21 in that game, with two TD's but two INT's, and the ground game only produced 113 net yards. Things did catch up to the Irish as they went into East Lansing last Saturday, as Javon Ringer rambled for 201 yards and two TD's and Clausen threw two more picks. The result was a 23-7 defeat that brings up certain doubts as Notre Dame hosts Purdue.

The Boilermakers come with another NFL prospect at running back in Kory Sheets (180 yards vs. Oregon two weeks ago), and a QB who is a notch or two above Brian Hoyer in senior Curtis Painter, who may be having an off-year as compared to his 2007 numbers (60%, 3 TD's, 3 INT's) but who will be able to do business with time at his disposal, as the Irish have not pressured opposing quarterbacks (just one sack). And Notre Dame has yet to encounter such a balanced passing attack (Greg Orton, Desmond Tardy and Keith Smith all have at least 150 yards receiving).
Clausen is the signal-caller more likely to make the big mistake, having thrown two interceptions in each game this year. Golden Tate is a capable playmaker, but he's virtually all alone in that regard. Sheets had 141 yards in last season's meeting. The technical numbers don't support the Irish all that much, either, as they're 4-11 ATS in the last 15 in view of Touchdown Jesus. The better team on the field is getting a point, and the home field advantage doesn't work for the host. Let's go with the Boilermakers, the one-point underdog in the BetUS NCAA college football betting odds.
