The White Sox dropped a rare road game at Comerica Park in last nights MLB online gambling affair dropping its mark to 22-10 since 2005, and in the process saw its seven-game winning streak snapped. Jose Contreras churned out his worst effort in quite some time allowing 13 hits and six runs in six plus innings of work to get tagged with his fourth loss of the season. Nate Robertson made MLB bettors that backed the home dogged Tigers very happy by limiting Chicago to eight hits and three runs with a K/BB ratio of 4/2 in 6 1/3rd innings of work. Both 2B Placido Polanco and 1B Miguel Cabrera had huge nights combining for six hits, two RBI’s, and three runs scored. The victory allowed the Tigers to claw to 10-games under .500 at 27-37, and they now sit 10 games in back of the division leading White Sox. As great an MLB wager Chicago has been at home (20-9 SU), they’ve been average on the road dropping to one game under .500 at 17-18 with last night’s loss. Still, they sit perched atop the AL Central 6.5-games in front of the Minnesota Twins. Chicago owns a 5-2 series advantage in their 2008 battles with their division rivals.
Javier Vazquez bounced back from his last outing against Tampa Bay to pick up his sixth victory of the season last Friday night allowing four runs through 5 1/3rd innings against the Minnesota Twins. The effort was uncharacteristic of his body of work thus far, but it was still good enough for the win even though he allowed nine hits (2 HR) and only struck out four. So far on the road this season, Vazquez is 2-3 with a 3.65 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. Chicago has won three of his last five starts as a visitor. In his career against the Tigers, J.V. is 5-4 with a 4.03 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in nine overall starts. He dominated the Tigers in his lone start against them this season allowing just five hits and no runs with a K/BB ratio of 9/0 through seven innings back in mid April.
Justin Verlander’s struggles have been tough to watch this season. He figured to be the ace of the staff before the season started, but that prognostication just hasn’t come to fruition. He enters tonight’s start a woeful 2-9 on the year with a ridiculous 5.50 ERA and 1.39 WHIP allowing 79 hits and 51 runs (46 earned) with a K/BB ratio of 52/35 in 82 innings of work. The Tigers have lost 11 of his 13 overall starts, and they’ve only managed victories in two of his eight starts at Comerica Park. He seems to have turned it around over the last month though, and comes into tonight’s start having reached the seventh inning his L/3 starts. That said he’s been woeful against the White Sox throughout his career compiling a 1-6 mark with a 6.13 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 10 overall starts. He got bombarded by the Palehose in a pair of starts back in early April.
