The Washington Nationals, (26-40, 35-31 RL) snapped their four-game losing streak in emphatic fashion on Tuesday, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates, (31-34, 34-31 RL) 7-6 while simultaneously making my selection in yesterday’s sports betting matchup a losing wager for online MLB baseball bettors who followed my advice in the BetUS Locker Room on taking the pirates and starter Paul Maholm.

The Nationals pounded out 14 hits on Tuesday including a season-high five home runs to pick up just their second victory in their last ten games overall and should have an excellent opportunity to do so again tonight as they will face struggling Pirates right-handed starter Ian Snell (2-6, 5.65).

"We been lacking the power pretty much the whole season so to see them come in bunches today, that's a good sign," said Nationals manager Manny Acta.

 

Snell hasn’t won a game since early May and has gone a horrific 0-6 with a 6.24 ERA in his last 10 starts, though he did seem to get straightened out a bit in his last start as he limited the Arizona Diamondbacks to just two runs, (one earned) on five hits while striking out nine strikeouts in five innings.

 

"I think I did all right, I came out more aggressive, throwing my fastball more, and I had them thinking the slider was coming," Snell said. "I'm trying to get back my rhythm."

 

Snell was beaten by the Nationals 5-2 on May 4, allowing four runs on 10 hits in six innings.

 

The Nationals will counter with left-hander John Lannan (4-6, 3.47 ERA), who has gone an unimpressive 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA in his last three starts, though he has gotten a total of just four runs of support in those three outings.

 

Lannan didn’t look particularly bad in his last outing, though he struggled a bit with his control, walking four batters but allowing just two earned runs and four hits in six innings of the Nationals’ 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.

 

Lannan was also rocked by the Pirates on May 2, giving up six runs on six hits in three quick innings of an 11-4 loss.

Analysis: I picked the Pittsburgh Pirates to win yesterday with Paul Maholm on the mound and am coning back with the Pirates in tonight’s contest as I expect Pirates starter Ian Snell to get back to looking like the blossoming young starter – and staff leader – that he was for the Pirates earlier this season and that they need him to be again.
