Tips for MLB Sharps - Best UNDER Umps
by Mike Rose

Over the last few months in the MLB betting season, ‘unders’ have been coming in at a ridiculous clip. The men in blue could be just as important to handicapping a game as the arms on the mound, so check out BetUS Sportsbook’s list of the top ‘under’ umpires this season to date…
1: Ted Barrett (6-17-1): There may not be a hotter trend in all of baseball than to bet the ‘under’ when Barrett is the man behind the dish. He has seen a whopping nine straight games stay under the baseball betting ‘total’, and in those games, he has only come within 1.5 runs of the number once. His average runs per game in that stretch is a mere 6.44, which has lowered his season average to 8.1. Barrett may not be issuing many strikeouts in that stretch (11.0 per contest), but he isn’t handing out free passes either (4.9 per game).
2: John Hirschbeck (6-17): Much like Barrett, Hirschbeck has been on an insane tear for ‘under’ bettors. He is a perfect 0-7 against the baseball betting ‘total’ since his last outing in the month of June, and he hasn’t seen double digits scored in a game since June 25th. Unfortunately, Hirschbeck hasn’t called balls and strikes in a game since July 31st, but when he comes back behind the mound, he’s certainly one to look out for if you’re hoping to cash a winning ticket on an ‘under’.
3: Brian Runge (5-14-1): Runge has the fewest number of ‘over’ results for umpires with at least 20 starts on the season. He only has five victories for ‘over’ bettors on the season, the most recent of which came back on June 19th. In his L/7 starts, teams have only averaged putting together 6.3 runs per game, but just like Hirschbeck, Runge hasn’t been seen behind the plate since the end of July.
4: James Hoye (8-19-2): The most ‘under’ results for baseball umpires on the season belongs to Hoye with 19. He has only seen one ‘over’ game since July 2nd, but for the most part, he has had at least one top-echelon pitcher on the mound when he is calling games. Just recently, Tim Lincecum, Roy Halladay, Johan Santana, and James Shields have all added a victory in their ‘under’ column courtesy of Hoye being the man behind the dish. In his L/9 contests, Hoye has only seen an average of 5.9 runs per game hit the scoreboard, which has brought his season total down to 8.6 runs per game.
5: Ron Kulpa (4-9-1): Kulpa has only umpped one ‘over’ contest since the last time we addressed the best ‘under’ umps in the game, and that was in his last outing between the Padres and Cardinals on Saturday. He saw 11 runs go on the scoreboard, the highest total number of runs that he has seen since the end of June. It was only the fourth time in 14 starts that Kulpa umpped a game which ended with at least ten runs on the board.
