Heading into Tuesday's play the Atlanta Braves are the biggest money-makers in all of baseball. Their 5-1 record has yielded Braves backers $470 on $100 wagers since opening day.
The Braves swept three games at Philadelphia to open the season and won the last two games of the three-game series with the Mets. The Braves are alone atop the NL East for the first time since April 5, 2006.
The Braves rebuilt their bullpen in the off-season, and relief pitching has given them the edge thus far, and bettors are cashing in.
The Arizona D-Backs (6-2) have also been turning a profit for their investors. They've reeled off five straight wins and have collected $400 on the year.
Other teams who are cashing in are: Mets (5-2), Pirates (4-3), Marlins (5-2), Padres (5-2), Angels (5-2) and Twins (4-2). All of these teams have won over $200.
At 1-6, it should come as no surprise that the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies have lost more money than any other team.
The Giants have dropped $545. Their only win was in the third game of a season-opening series against the Padres in San Francisco. It was the third time since the Giants moved to San Francisco in 1958 that they lost six of their first seven games. The other two times were 1967 and 1980.
The Phillies have lost $565. Philadelphia also lost six of its first seven games last year and in 2004.
