Nobody who follows inside MLB is especially surprised that the Cleveland Indians are winning some ball games this season. It is simply how they are doing it that has some of the pundits scratching their heads.
A team that traditionally scores early and often and then cross their fingers that they may hold on for the win, so far this season is the exact opposite. The Indians have the third-worse batting in the majors with a .252 team average, while the pitching staff boasts the third-best ERA in baseball at 3.59.
Bob Wickman, the punch line to a few ‘how fat is he?’ jokes is all of a sudden leading the American League with 20 saves in 23 tries by the middle of June. The Wick and his bullpen mates have helped the Indians go 28-3 when leading after six innings, and over the last 40 games the bullpen’s ERA is a remarkable 2.22.
