Unlike last season, when North Carolina was the overwhelming pre-season favorite and romped all the way to the NCAA title, things are a lot more wide-open this year. The Kansas Jayhawks and Texas Longhorns, both out of the Big 12, rose to the top early, and while Texas has had a rough go of it lately, dropping three games, Kansas has been able to rebound from a loss to Tennessee and regain the top spot.
The Bis East is well-represented, with no less than four teams in the Associated Press Top 10, including the #2 Villanova Wildcats and #3 Syracuse Orange. It's going to be a tremendous endurance test when the conference tournament takes place at Madison Square Garden, and this conference could wind up with as many as seven or eight bids to the Big Dance.
Then Michigan State Spartans are also hovering, and that's a good place for Tom Izzo's teams to be. Michigan State has historically been a team that has gotten better as the season progresses, and in the #5 position in the AP poll, they could be a value bet to get back to the national championship game, as they did last year during March Madness.
Let's also not forget about the Kentucky Wildcats, checking in at #4 in the AP rankings, who have a dynamite first-year combination in new head coach John Calipari and point guard John Wall. They haven't made it to the Final Four in a while, but this could be the year.
The perennial teams like the Duke Blue Devils, Georgetown Hoyas, Ohio State Buckeyes and Tennessee Volunteers will have something to say about it by the time March rolls around. Will mid-major teams like the New Mexico Lobos, Gonzaga Bulldogs, UAB Blazers or Northern Iowa Panthers be a factor? How about the Ivy league's Big Red of Cornell, who are #25 in the Coaches' poll?
Who will be standing tall when the dust settles? That's as good a question now as it was at the beginning of the season. Hey - that's why they call it March Madness!
