August 24th Horse Pick of the Day - Del Mar Race 10

If there is one thing that artificial tracks, like Del Mar’s Polytrack, have done it has increased the size of the online betting fields. That’s a good thing for online racebook fans who usually spend most of their time looking for overlaid horse bets.

Well, in this weekend’s Grade I Pacific Classic, the 10th race on Del Mar’s Sunday card, there is no doubt that taking a short price on a horse like Go Between makes no sense.

Almost every single online racebook fan in the world will notice that there is a ton of speed, on paper, in this race. I’m going to take the opposite notion and plan my wagering on this race around the speed. Why? Because I know that the prices on the horses I have chosen in the Pacific Classic are going to be absolutely phenomenal.

Delosvientos - - 30/1 morning line

Am I missing something? Has this horse not won three races in a row by open lengths going 1 ½ miles? Yes, I understand that on paper there appears to be a lot of speed in this race, but Delosvientos and Well Armed should separate themselves from the rest of the field based on their pace ratings.

This guy stumbled in his last, got bumped, and still managed to run the Grade II Brooklyn Handicap field off their feet. He’s incredibly fast and don’t tell me that his connections haven’t been thinking about this race as he has had no less than three works over the Del Mar Polytrack since early August.

The speed of the speed should get a nice lead over Well Armed with that one trying to rate some. I love this overlaid, underappreciated, son of Siphon in this year’s Pacific Classic.

Well Armed - - 10/1 morning line

Well Armed has an issue in the sense that if he tries to run with Delosvientos he will get burned on the lead. If he doesn’t, then he might not rate kindly for jockey Aaron Gryder. I do believe that they will try to rate Well Armed, however, as the last thing that Well Armed wants to do is get into a speed duel.

Because I am under the impression that the pace won’t be nearly as quick as some other online racebook handicappers have predicted, Well Armed should be able to hold on for second place in this race.

Student Council - - 7/2 morning line

The second choice in the morning line should do very well in the race as he shouldn’t be too far off the pace that Delosvientos figures to set. He can close as well as the morning line chalk, Go Between, and has won this race before.

That makes him a definite class play. The best closer of the bunch may not be able to run down a freak like Delosvientos, but he could find himself battling Well Armed for the place money.

Wagering Strategy

Delosvientos deserves a big online wager to win, place and show at those incredible 30 to 1 odds, should they hold. Even at 15 to 1, this horse is close to a stand-out in my eyes depending on whether or not you believe that the pace will be fast or slow. I like him to wire the field. I will also use him in exacta and trifecta boxes with Student Council and Well Armed.
