Horse Pick of the Day

Sometimes it makes no sense to try and beat the chalk. If sports betting fans are faced with having to make an online bet on the chalk, or not betting at all, then it might make sense to just dump a few online wagering dollars on the chalks’ nose.

Why? Because low online odds don’t constitute an underlay. What constitutes an underlay is when a horse is going off at lower online racebook odds than what thoroughbred handicappers feel is fair.

I don’t believe that will happen with Thursday’s Horse Pick of the Day.

Serra Song - - 3/1 online betting odds

Okay, so Serra Song technically probably won’t be going off the chalk in this race but his online betting odds will probably be low enough for a lot of sportsbook betting fans to pass. I won’t. He hasn’t won since April, but his works have been excellent and he’s trained by Richard Mandella. Mandella’s obviously pointing this fella towards higher purses but he’ll have to prove that he can handle this suspect bunch of allowance foes before stepping up in class. I have no doubt that Serra Song will.

Antique Avenue - - 5/2 online betting odds

Antique Avenue is going from turf to cushion track for trainer Thomas Bell. It’s only a 4% winning move for Bell, but Avenue has the requisite speed to stick with Lucky Honey and because he comes from the turf, you know that Avenue will be fit. He gets regular rider Aaron Gryder for the call and that $80,000 optional claimer he just ran in was way tougher than this.

Lucky Honey - - 7/2 online betting odds

The speed of the race just wired at this distance on this track in his last and keeps top jockey Rafael Bejarano for another money run. Of course, he’s stepping up in class big time going from a $25,000 state bred optional claimer to this allowance race. He could wire the field but Serra Song has some speed and Antique Avenue will be pressing him the whole way. Lucky Honey could surprise or pack it in at the top of the stretch. He’s a tough call.

Wagering Strategy

I’ll make an online bet on Serra Song to win and place. I will also key Serra Song on top of Antique Avenue and Lucky Honey in an exacta and trifecta.
