2009 Breeders’ Cup - Runners to Include on Your Betting Ticket

Yesterday we found three live longshots for Friday’s card (Tapitsfly, Pure Clan, and Rainbow View in case you missed it), and today we will look at a trio of live longshots for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup card.

This year’s Breeders’ Cup has a couple of runners like Conduit (Turf) and Goldikova (Mile) that look like slam dunks, but over the 14 races during the two day event, there are plenty of live longshots and vulnerable favorites.

Load up your wagering account early to be ready for the action.

Here are three runners at generous prices to include in your exotics on Saturday:

Turf Sprint

Lord Shanakill is returning off a three month layoff and is reported to have come up lame after his last race, which was a fifth place finish in the Sussex (G1) going a mile, a race won by Rip Van Winkle, a main threat in this year’s Classic. The colt won the one mile Prix Jean Prat (G1) at Chantilly and mixed it up with Mastercraftsman (the heavy favorite in the Dirt Mile) three back, finishing 1 3/4 lengths behind that highly regarded runner.

The colt sports good works over the Pro Ride surface at Santa Anita, and what really is appealing is he lands with the Richard Mandella barn, who popped with four Breeders’ Cup wins in 2003.

When this guy is on the top of his game he is a very talented three year old and I have to think Mandella is going to have him fully cranked today, and we should catch a fair price.

Juvenile

Radiohead is an interesting European invader and note the IEAH Stable bought a piece of this guy, who has only raced on turf and has not been beyond six furlongs in his six starts. Last out he was a fast closing second in the Middle Park Stakes (G1) at Newmarket, beaten a half length for the top spot.

His best effort was in the Norfolk (G2) four back where he was rank early, was nearly bumped sideways in the stretch and came back to win by two lengths.

The colt should have no problem handling the extra ground. He is by 2001 Juvenile winner Johannesburg out of a Belong to Me mare. The fact that Dwyer is up and not Spencer will keep my blood pressure in check, and we should catch a decent price

Dirt Mile

Mr. Sidney has done his best running on turf and the Mile may have been a suitable spot. Except for the European shipper Mastercraftsman, this race looks like a much easier spot. The five-year-old caught soft ground last out in a decent third in the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) at Keeneland. His previous two starts at a mile produced wins in the Firecracker (G2) and Maker's Mark (G1).

He has tried the fake stuff just once in his career, checking in second over the poly at Keeneland versus Alw-2 foes. Note Bullsbay was third in that race. We have hall of fame trainer Bill Mott and jockey Kent Desormeaux in our corner, and the 12/1 ML looks fair enough to give this guy a shot of pulling off the upset.

Good luck padding your bankroll today!
