The PGA Championship - Group Betting from TPC Sawgrass

The TPC, one of the PGA Tour’s biggest events, is roughly a day away and BetUS online sportsbook fans should be ready to rock and roll.

What’s going to happen in the TPC this week?  For starters, three of the top golfers in the world will be trying to get back on track.  Phil Mickelson hasn’t been all that great since the Masters, Sergio Garcia is just having a bad year, and Tiger Woods is starting to come back to the level bettors are used to him being at.

It makes for some interesting wagering opportunities in the sportsbook including betting on the winner in individual groups.

Let’s analyze Tournament Group Betting for The Player’s Championship this week.

Golf:  TPC Tournament Group Betting

Group A:  Sean O’Hair +275, Geoff Ogilvy +300, Jim Furyk +300, Luke Donald +300, Kenny Perry +350

Analysis:  Even though O’Hair comes into this hot after winning last week’s Quail Hollow Championship, Kenny Perry to me is the best wager in this group. Ogilvy has won a couple of tournaments and is ranked highly in some key categories, and Furyk is having another good year. But it just comes down to value and getting Kenny Perry at +350 to beat the other four in this group provides excellent value.  Perry hasn’t been the same since choking at Augusta, but just when his competitors have forgotten about him, Perry will step it up.  I see him as a solid wager in this group.

Pick:  Kenny Perry at +350

Group B:  Sergio Garcia +275, Padraig Harrington +300, Henrick Stenson +300, Paul Casey +350, Retief Goosen +350

Analysis:  Harrington probably won’t be on his game for the TPC.  Padraig will be waiting for the U.S. Open in order to show his best stuff in the states.  Stenson has a terrific record at Sawgrass and both Paul Casey and Retief Goosen have been solid this year, but I’m going with the defending champion, Sergio Garcia, to pull out a victory in this group.  Garcia should turn his 2009 form around in this.

Pick:  Sergio Garcia at +275

Group C:  Rory McIlroy +300, Ernie Els +300, Steve Stricker +300, Camilo Villegas +300, Hunter Mahan +300

Analysis:  All five golfers in Group C have a chance to win it which is why all five are going off at the same odds.  The difference for me is the fact that Steve Stricker has five top tens out of ten events.  That’s 50%.  In his last two tournaments, Stricker has finished 6th in the Masters and 7th in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.  He’s well rested and should be ready to roll in the TPC.

Pick:  Steve Stricker at +300

Group D:  Robert Allenby +275, J.B. Holmes +300, Stewart Cink +300, Trevor Immelman +350, Charles Howell +350

Analysis:  Allenby is the chalk but he hasn’t been that good at Sawgrass in recent years. Nobody else appears to want to win in this group, so I’m going with Stewart Cink because he’s missed the cut in two of the last three tournaments he’s played in.  To me, it’s a sign that his form will come around in the TPC because it can’t get any worse.

Pick:  Stewart Cink at +300

Group E:  Brian Gay +275, Jonathan Byrd +275, Tim Clark +300, Briny Baird +300, Charlie Wi +300

Analysis:  The TPC could be another victory for Brian Gay whose game is perfect for Sawgrass.  The Verizon Heritage winner should have no problem dispatching of his overmatched rivals in this group.  Gay is just playing well and has the golf game suited for the TPC.  That puts him over the top in Group E.

Pick:  Brian Gay at +275
