Dubai World Championship Tee-off: 11/19/2009

The best International golfers in the world head to Dubai to take on the Earth course designed by Greg Norman in this week’s $10,000,000 Dubai World Championship.

Which golfers will come out ahead in tournament match play and which golfers will fail? With no Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson in the field, the DWC figures to be an exceptional golf betting event.

Young Rory McIlroy is the favorite to win at +800 but is a good bet in the tournament matchups?

Best Dubai World Championship Tournament Matchup Wagers

1. Ian Poulter -125 vs. Retief Goosen -105 - - Goosen has finished in the Top 10 in four out of his last 10 tournaments. Poulter won the Barclays Singapore Open but then finished 45th in the WGC-HSBC. Poulter bounced back to finish 5th in the UBS Hong Kong Open but the pattern is clear. Like that “bouncey” race horse, Poulter will most likely get drilled this week because he was good in his last tournament. I’m all over Goosen.

Pick: Retief Goosen

2. Anthony Wall -120 vs. Thongchai Jaidee -110 - - Don’t sleep on Thailand’s best golfer, Thongchai Jaidee. Jaidee has finished in the Top 20 in his last four events with an 11th place finish in the UBS Hong Kong Open. Wall is going the other way by finishing 6th four tournaments ago, 7th three tournaments ago, 12th two tournaments ago and 14th in his last tournament. Bet Jaidee.

Pick: Thongchai Jaidee

3. Ernie Els -120 vs. Lee Westwood -110 - - Els is a closer, meaning that he will shut the door on his competition if given the chance, while Westwood is Mr. Consistency. Westwood reminds me a lot of Jim Furyk, always close, but never quite there. I’m going to let the odds steer me in the right direction with this wager because Westwood and Els are incredibly close. Because they’re so close, it makes sense to bet the guy with the better odds. That would be Westwood.

Pick: Lee Westwood

4. Camilo Villegas -120 vs. Luke Donald -110 - - Save for a 5th place finish in the Volvo World Match Play Championship, Villegas hasn’t been all that great in 2009. Things are turning around for him though, his 25th place finish in the WGC-HSBC wasn’t all that bad. Donald is hot with a 7th place finish in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and a 10th place finish in the Madrid Masters. I have to go with Donald in this situation. Better odds and seemingly in better form.

Pick: Luke Donald

5. Rory McIlroy -125 vs. Martin Kaymer -105 - - McIlroy is the top rated golfer on the European Tour. He’s also the favorite to win the DWC outright at +800 in the sportsbook. Kaymer has been exceptional in his last four tournaments with 6th, 2nd, 13th and 6th place finishes. Is Kaymer worth a shot in this matchup? Nope. McIlroy has proven that he belongs on the big stage with 20th place finish in the Masters and a 10th place finish in the U.S. Open. The man is a stud and even though his odds are short to win the DWC outright, he should dominate Kaymer in this matchup.

Pick: Rory McIlroy

6. Sergio Garcia -120 vs. Ross Fisher -110 - - Garcia is going backwards with a 4th place, 9th place and 23rd place finish in his last three tournaments. Sergio also finished 81st in the USPGA Championship. He’s just not the same golfer as he was in 2008. Fisher isn’t tearing things up but at the odds he’s easily the better bet in this matchup.

Pick: Ross Fisher
