Wyndam Classic Preview from Greensboro, North Carolina

This Thursday the PGA Tour travels to the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina for the Wyndham Classic. Although a few of the top players will be absent, there are sill plenty of guys who can light it up out there.

El Tigre is the most notable absentee, but he has every right to take this week off after the beat down that Y.E. Yang put on him at the 2009 USPGA Championship. For the second time at Hazeltine, Woods was beaten by a little known golfer in the final round of the USPGA.

Real golfing fans will enjoy watching the U.S. Open winner, Lucas Glover, battle it out with Sergio Garcia and David Toms. All three guys have signed on to play in the Wyndham Classic and all three have the ability to win the tournament.

Garcia, in particular, is a curious case as 2009 has just been awful for the usually stout Spaniard. His 10th place finish in the U.S. Open not withstanding, Garcia has played more like a drunken soldier on the PGA Tour this year then as the true rival to Tiger Woods. He missed the cut at the Quail Hollow and the St. Jude Classic and he finished in 77th place at the Shell Houston Open.

Usually, all three tournaments would have been fodder for a golfer with Garcia’s ability. The fact that he shows up in the Wyndham, a week after missing the cut at the USPGA, says that Garcia is probably serious about getting his swing back.

Of course, his competitors aren’t just going to hand him the Wyndham Classic Trophy. Glover finished 6th at the USPGA last week and has been consistent all year. Toms has had two disappointing finishes but is dangerous in tournaments like this.

Then, there’s Tim Clark and Rod Pampling both of which on any given day can really light up the scoreboard with negative numbers. Clark is a tough competitor and Pampling has been known to put in a good weekend of golf here and there.

Who looks to be the danger to Garcia, Toms, Glover, Clark and Pampling? I like Michael Letzig who has finished in the Top 10 in his last two tournaments. Letzig could be a golfer to watch this week as he has had a chance to rest up while some in this field, namely Garcia, Toms, Glover and Clark, had to battle Tiger, Yang and Padraig in the USPGA.

Letzig could sneak into position ala Y.E. Yang because all of the attention, no doubt, will be on Glover and Garcia.

Look for Michael Letzig to give a good showing of himself this week. As for Garcia, there isn’t much to say. Sergio knows what he needs to do. He just needs to go out and do it.
