Palm Beach Gardens, FL February 26 – March 4, 2007
It is back to stroke-play for most of the PGA Tour this weekend. One week removed from the Accenture Match-Play Championship in Arizona, the players make their way to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida for The Honda Classic.
The top five players in the Fed Ex Cup are skipping this weekend’s festivities. That makes Charley Hoffman, winner of January’s Sony Open, the highest-ranked player to tee it up in Florida. Jeff Quinney (9), who has posted top-ten finishes in each of his last four tournaments, and Jim Furyk (10), who has top-five finishes in each of his last three tournaments, round out the other players ranked in the top-ten.
Last year’s Honda Classic champion, Luke Donald, returns for the 2007 edition. With two top-ten finishes already this year (2nd in the Mercedes-Benz Championship and 7th in Sony Open), Donald is ranked 13th in the FedEx Cup and has hit nearly 71% of his greens in regulation.
Geoff Ogilvy finished second last year but chose not to return this year. Unlike Ogilvy, the third (David Toms), fourth (Billy Mayfair) and fifth-place finishers (Tom Pernice, Jr.) will be back to compete in 2007.
Besides Donald, three of the last five tournament winners are also in the field. Those players include: Padraig Harrington (2005), Todd Hamilton (2004) and Matt Kucher (2002).
Finally, given several crafty rounds put in so far this season by each player, it would be unwise to ignore wily veterans Mark Calcavecchia (8th – Bob Hope Classic; 4th – Buick Invitational) and Corey Pavin (6th – Pebble Beach) in Florida this weekend.
