PGA Power Rankings heading into the U.S. Open

This weekend is the U.S. Open and BetUS golf betting fanatics will want to check out the PGA Power Rankings going into U.S. Open week.

Being the second major of 2009, the U.S. Open no doubt will be a competitive affair as the best golfers in the world will compete for one of the biggest prizes on the PGA Tour. Tiger Woods, as always, will be the favorite, but there are a number of golfers that could potentially stand in Tiger’s way as he goes for his second U.S. Open victory in a row.

The BetUS Sportsbook will be offering wagering on almost every aspect of this tournament. Before getting into that, gamblers should check out the golf power rankings.

Golf: Power Rankings

  1. Tiger Woods +175 - - After the fantastic 65 he shot in the final round of The Memorial last week, Tiger Woods has jumped up to 4th place in the FedEx Cup Points Standings. Woods is returning to Bethpage Black, the scene of his 2002 U.S. Open victory, and no doubt will be ready to get it done again. He’s the unquestioned best golfer in the world right now.

  1. Phil Mickelson +800 - - Mickelson is now ranked 6th in the FedEx Cup Points Standings. Lefty hit the links for the first time since his wife was diagnosed with cancer in the St. Jude Classic. He didn’t win the tournament but he sure played well considering he was coming off of a layoff. Well enough, I think, to consider him for a victory in the U.S. Open.

  1. Paul Casey +2000 - - Casey’s 9th place ranking in the point standings for the FedEx Cup makes him a tough player for gamblers to pass. He’s almost always in the top ten and even though he had a less than stellar Memorial, he should be ready to come back at Bethpage.

  1. Zach Johnson +5000 - - Exceptional odds on Johnson if you really think he has a chance at the U.S. Open. Considering he’s ranked number 1 in the FedEx Cup Points Standings, the 50 to 1 makes him an overlay. His scoring average of 69.94 is the lowest of his career and he’s already won two tournaments in 2009.

  1. Geoff Ogilvy +1400 - - Ogilvy no doubt improved last week in The Memorial. If he was using that tournament as a prep for the U.S. Open, then he it served its purpose. He hit most of the fairways and he was putting well. The second ranked golfer for the FedEx Cup should be good enough to put a run in at Bethpage.

  1. Steve Stricker +3000 - - Stricker has been very good in 2009 with an average scoring round of 69.29. He is ranked 3rd in the FedEx Cup Points Standings and has a victory, a second, a third and 6 top ten finishes.

  1. Kenny Perry +4000 - - A lot of bettors may have given up hope that Perry turns it around in time to win the U.S. Open but his stats are still top ten status. He is ranked 7th in the points standings and has a victory, a second, and 6 top tens. Of course, since the Masters, where he melted down in the final three holes, Perry hasn’t been the same golfer as he was earlier in 2009.

  1. Nick Watney +5000 - - Watney has been somewhat of a surprise this year. A victory and a second puts him into the top ten in the FedEx Cup rankings. His 69.94 per round average is the best of his career.

  1. Sean O’Hair +3000 - - O’Hair is ranked 5th in the FedEx Cup Points Standings, won the Quail Hollow, finished second to Tiger Woods in the Arnold Palmer, and is shooting a 69.68 average per round. He’s a definite guy to watch going into U.S. Open week.

  1. Rory Sabbatini +6500 - - The odds on Sabbatini to win the U.S. Open are just too high. He won the HP Byron Nelson Classic, finished 2nd in the Zurich Classic, and is ranked 10th in the FedEx Cup rankings.
