Holing out his third-shot in a three-person playoff, Rory Sabbatini claimed the win over Bernard Langer and Jim Furyk at Houston’s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Pat Perez missed the playoff by two strokes, while Nathan Green and Tom Lehman finished one stroke behind Perez.
The Tour moves North to Ohio this weekend to tackle the Nicklaus designed Muirfield Village course in Dublin. Curiously, Sabbatini is one of the few names who is not currently entered in the field as of today.
Sweden’s Carl Pettersson beat out Zach Johnson and Brett Wetterich by two-strokes to claim last year’s Memorial win. Brandt Jobe, Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson each finished three-strokes off the winning pace while rounding out last year’s top-six.
Ernie Els claimed the Memorial win in 2004 while Bart Bryant did so in 2005. Curiously, both Els and Bryant beat out Fred Couples (the ’98 Memorial winner) to claim their win. Tiger Woods put together three consecutive Memorial wins from 1999 to 2001.
Woods, Mickelson and Vijay Singh are currently ranked first through third, respectively, in the FedEx Cup and they are, likewise, the biggest favorites to win this weekend (Woods: 5/2, Michelson: 7/1 and Singh: 14/1). Zach Thomas and Charles Howell, III, are ranked fourth and fifth in the Cup race, but the odds they have been assigned do not reflect their status (33/1 and 80/1, respectively).
Woods has entered only seven tournaments this season and has won three of them, while finishing in a tie for second at The Masters. He’s dialed-in and it would be silly to overlook his chances this weekend; especially, given his three prior wins in this tournament.
Last year’s winner, Pettersson, missed three of his first five cuts this season but has made the cut each of his last eight attempts. He has six top-25 finishes this season but his best finish (and only top-ten result this year) was his eighth-place effort at the Verizon Heritage. He was 52nd last weekend at the Colonial and carries 100/1 odds into this weekend.
Jim Furyk (18/1), Ernie Els (22/1), Sergio Garcia (28/1) and Adam Scott (28/1) carry the best odds of winning other than those assigned to Woods, Mickelson and Singh.
