Last year’s Honda Classic went in to a grueling four-player playoff that lasted two days. Mark Wilson stunned the crowd by winning his first PGA TOUR event by sinking eleven 10-foot putts to reward his golf betting faithful and hoist his first trophy. With $5.5 million on the line, and a stacked field of competitors, this year’s Honda Classic could be another thriller.
The Champion Course at the PGA National Resort and Spa is located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida which boasts some of the most stunning greenery and foreground in the entire country. Of course, the luscious scenery has witnessed some of golf’s greatest moments as well. The most notable single moment at the Champion Course was when Fuzzy Zoeller hit a 240-yard 3-wood from a bunker on the famous 18th hole to save par in a heated 1983 Ryder Cup. It was perhaps one of the most stunning moments in golf, and certainly a moment emblazed in PGA fan’s minds.
With the winner taking home $990,000 and 25,000 FedEx Cup Points, you can bet on some of the PGA’s finest rising stars to appear in Palm Beach this weekend. Boo Weekley, returning champion Mark Wilson Jose Coceres and Camilo Villegas will all return to this year’s event in an effort to hopefully recreate the exhilarating four-player playoff from the 2007 tournament. Considering how well all four of these underdogs did last year, it will be hard to keep your betting dollars away from them.
Perhaps the two most dangerous players in the field will be Canadian, Mike Weir, and Sergio Garcia. Garcia is still searching for his first big performance of the year, while Weir ended last year with a triumphant victory in Match Play over Tiger in Montreal. Both of these veteran swingers will be looking to cement their standings as threats to Tiger in the big events, and nothing would kick start their season like a victory at the prestigious Honda Classic.
Of course, youngsters Zach Johnson and Justin Rose will have something to say about this. The sweet swinging Rose was upset in the first round of the Match Play Championship last weekend, but will be looking to exact some revenge on the field. This course play well to a player like Rose, who lacks ideal power but makes accurate and careful shots that stay true and honest.
Just Leonard enters the tournament with eleven career PGA TOUR victories with a lot to prove this season. He hasn’t won a major since the 1997 British Open and hasn’t made a lot of noise since the Putt Heard Round The World from the 1999 Ryder Cup. Leonard will be a longshot in our sportsbook because he has yet to prove he can play on an elite level at a consistent rate.
As always, one of the betting community’s betting favorites is Angel Cabrera who toppled Tiger and Furyk in the 2007 U.S. Open. He is a deadly threat when he is out to prove himself and deserves some of your betting attention when you are placing a bet. He is an outside shot considering how he plays in big events such as the prestigious Honda Classic.
If this season is proving anything, it’s that the cream of the PGA crop is rising to the top. Tiger Woods is driving the field to keep up with him on the FedEx Cup Rankings and in tournament victories. The smart money will be on Mike Weir this weekend, while I still like Justin Rose as an outside shot.
Bet on all your favorite PGA golfers in our PGA sportsbook as the Honda Classic tees-off on February 28th – March 2nd. The Match Play Championship was an electrifying event to say the least. And if last year’s Honda Classic was any indication, so will this weekend’s 2008 Honda Classic at the Champions Course in Palm Beach Gardens.
