PGA Championship Update - Ross Fisher Upsets Tiger’s and Paddy’s Duel

Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington were barely through the 11th hole when 28 year old Ross Fisher sunk a birdie on the 16th to tie Woods atop the leader board at -5 in the second round of the PGA Championship.
The 6’ 3” Fisher has really come into his own this yare with a 5th place finish at the U.S. Open and a 13th place finish in the British Open. If Fisher could find a way to stick with Tiger, and possibly beat the greatest golfer in the world, his 2009 will have been made.
Fisher, though, isn’t the only story from the PGA Championship going into the weekend. Tiger Woods is deadly on Saturday and Sunday when he is within two to three shots of the lead much less when he has the lead outright. The fact that he began to pull away, he was -7 on the 16th, says that Woods is ready to take charge tomorrow. A Woods versus Fisher Sunday would make for some interesting golf as the Englishman actually has 2 inches on the 6’ 1” Woods.
For Padraig Harrington, Friday has so far played out like last week’s 4th round in the WGC-Bridgestone. Harrington is a dynamite player but he tends to lose it going down the stretch in rounds with Woods seemingly hovering over his shoulder. Friday was the third round in row where Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington played together.
After Fisher, Woods and Harrington, some well known names dot the top of the leader board. Vijay Singh finished at -3 on Friday signaling that he, like always, has found his game towards the end of the year. Lucas Glover, the U.S. Open Champion is also at 3 under after shooting a 70 on Friday. Lee Westwood, one of the Sportsbook favorites to begin the tournament, hasn’t let up and should be a top contender on Saturday and Sunday.
Then there’s Rory McIlroy, arguably the toughest young golfer in the world, who has suddenly woken up and finds himself in contention going into the weekend. The same can’t be said for McIlroy’s American counterpart, Anthony Kim, who will limp into the weekend at +3.
Finally, there’s the much maligned yet much beloved Phil “Lefty” Mickelson who will be able to play this weekend as he did make the cut at +4.
Can Woods keep his streak of at least one major a year alive by winning the PGA Championship? Or will one of the upstarts, McIlroy or Fisher, show Woods that there are some golfers that can challenge him.
Will Lucas Glover make another magical major run? Can Padraig Harrington truly bounce back from the debacle that was the WGC-Bridgestone?
Answers to come this weekend.
