PGA Championship Odds: “Can Phil Finally Break Through?”
by BetUS Staff
Match-day: 8/7/2008 – 8/10/2008
Starting this Thursday the final major of the year will be played - the PGA Championship. It’s a chance for Phil Mickelson, the most talked about golfer in the world now that Tiger Woods won’t be back until 2009, to secure a major victory this season.
For golf betting fans, Mickelson has been a big tease. He had every chance to beat Vijay on the square in last weekend’s Bridgestone Invitational, but, like Lefty has been doing all year, he couldn’t close the deal.
Well, no excuses this week for Mickelson! This is a major. That means that the best golfer in the world (sans Tiger) should be in position to pad some sportsbook betting bankrolls with a victory in the final major of the year.
Of course, since Phil is the online wagering favorite, yours truly can’t very well pick him on top, right? I was all over Kenny Perry last weekend in the Bridgestone and he bombed. But I did mention Vijay as a golfer to look out for. Hey, that counts for something in the wild world of online golf betting!
One golfer who won’t be in this top ten, actually, is Vijay Sing. Singh won last weekend’s tournament and I doubt he could muster the interest to play that well in the PGA Championship just a week later. Vijay is a great golfer and he could make me look really stupid, but golf is a tough sport. It takes a lot of, well, everything, in order to put back-to-back brilliant tournaments together.
Let’s get to my top ten golfers to win the PGA Championship based golf odds!
PGA Championship - - Top Ten Online Betting Interests
1. Sergio Garcia - - online odds + 1800 - - His online odds are double what Lefty’s are. Sergio was the favorite to win this year’s British Open. We all know what happened there. I love Garcia going into this. He could really prove himself the one to beat after Thursday. At 18 to 1, that’s what I will be counting on!
2. Jim Furyk - - online odds + 1800 - - I like Furyk’s chances because he’s sort of flying under the radar in this tournament. I also think that by Thursday the online odds will drift closer to + 2000. That would make Jim 20 to 1 to win the final major of the season. Furyk could surprise.
3. Padraig Harrington - - online odds + 1800 - - Harrington proved me wrong by winning the British Open this year. Do I play with fire twice? I don’t think so! This guy is a serious golfer and with no Tiger there’s no reason not to believe he could come up huge in this thing.
4. Phil Mickelson - - online odds + 900 - - The online betting odds are once again way too low on Lefty. Yes, the guy is a serious contender. Yes, he’s been playing very well. Yes, this is a major, but he’s a horrible underlay in this field. I mean, 9 to 1? In golf? I can’t even consider Lefty for a wager, but I have to put him in the top five because he has a chance of winning this.
5. Anthony Kim - - online odds + 2200 - - Here’s a nice long shot pick. Kim has been playing well, can get to the greens and has a nice putter. He’s also underrated, which means he could sneak up on a few players this weekend.
6. Kenny Perry - - online odds + 3000 - - My man Kenny hasn’t played badly in two straight tournaments in a while. He was terrible last weekend. He should be great this weekend. I’m going to have a few bucks on the guy. You owe me Kenny! Let’s get it done!
7. Mike Weir - - online odds + 4500 - - Weir has been playing well for over a month now. Could he finally break through with a serious title this year? Maybe. At 45 to 1, he’s worth looking at.
8. Andres Romero - - online odds + 7500 - - Romero winning the PGA Championship would be out of left field, but he’s got the goods and he can drive the ball about as well as anybody else in this field. Why not? He was close in the British Open last year. From a long shot point-of-view, this guy is a viable online wagering play.
9. Trevor Immelman - - online odds + 6000 - - Sort of floundered last week, but like Perry, he doesn’t do that often. He’s a long shot – but everybody after Phil, Padraig, Sergio and Vijay, is a long shot. I like Trevor to have a good tournament. That’s all you can expect from a 60 to 1 shot. Now, if he does pull it off, then who’s the genius?
10. Stewart Cink - - online odds + 3000 - - Cink could definitely play well in the PGA Championship. He is a serious contender based on his ability to keep things under control. He’s also one of the top money leaders this year.
Good luck!
